HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1999-04-28, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 1999. A Note from Betty Well, have you finished fighting with your income tax papers and got them away? Now you can actually enjoy the days of April, the rain, the kids, the new growth, people out and about and of course the sunshine. There was lots of music on the weekend to entertain us. Face Plant was at the arena, with ear plugs available. Nice touch. As well, there were musical gatherings at the Presbyterian and Anglican Churches. Good reasons for a good weekend. Music teacher Emily Cousins accompanied three of her students to Walkerton Music Festival last week. Christine Bone. Kerry Bell and Nicole White. Good stuff girls. Kerry and Nicole won first. April recognizes volunteers, those special folk who put love in a situation, zip in an event and routine into chaos. In total 31.4 per cent of Canadians volunteered an average 149 hours in 1997. Young folk, I5 - 24, are the growth area of volunteers. Their numbers over the past decade continue to increase and now 33 per cent of youth do volunteer work. This survey also stated what we all know but forget to do, ask directly! In Canada 1.1 billion hours were volunteered in I997! Our community thanks you. There is lots of chatter around the United Church about May 15. It seems Queen Victoria has heard about the Church Perchers and is fussing about which black outfit she should wear to greet them. She is so excited she is having a party, Victoria's Spring Fling. Do come. Welcome home to the relieved university/college crowd. Now you just have to work to pay for next year. Have a good summer. Enjoy the April days. They're nearly gone. Bye now, Betty G. Students become animals for visiting arts program The Foundation for Enriching Education Perth Huron and the Avon'Maitland District School board are pleased to announce an exciting Artists in the Classroom program for Grade I students being delivered to 64 classes in 34 schools across the district in April, May and June. This program is based on the book Rainbow Crow by Nancy Van Leer. The artist for this program is Gail Fricker of Drama Alive, a talented drama-in-education specialist with many years of experience providing educational programs which use the arts to help young people explore their world and develop self-awareness and life skills. The students become the animals living in a forestry by making simple head masks to express their Oddfellows host day of fellowship The Annual District Oddfellows euchre party was held at Brussels Legion on April 10. This day was fellowship from Saugeen, Perth and Huron division of IOOF. This annual event started in 199 I. Each year the trophy is given to the District that has the highest points at the end of the day. Past District Deputy Brother Mel McCutcheon donated this trophy to the Lodge as part of his presentation in 1991. Saugeen District was the winner followed by Huron and Perth. A great day of fellowship was enjoyed by all. Euchre results The Rebekahs card party was held April 19 with six tables being played. Winners were: high lady, Muriel Whitfield; low lady, Ann Cunningham, high man, Ross Cunningham; low man, Doug Hemingway; lone hands, Viola Adams, Vi Howes; lucky draws, Bush Whittard, Bill Kellington, Jean Bewley, Doris Foster, Gertie Kellington, John Brown. Kathleen Cuthill. Mary Huether; lucky cup, Elunid McNair. At the Branch chosen identity. The group must deal with the threat of the "white stuff” (snow) that is covering their homes, food and friends. Through group discussions and role play, they problem solve, trying out different solutions, before sending Rainbow Crow (the artist) to the sun to fetch fire. In doing so. Rainbow Crow is burnt and her beautiful feathers turn black. The issues of acceptance of differences, racial harmony, and environmental awareness are brought to the forefront as the artist, teacher and class play together with storytelling, movement, role play, music, problem solving and co-operative learning. By JoAnn McDonald Well, another month has almost passed at the Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and it has been the usual busy place. A "Carrying the Colours" seminar was put on Saturday, April 17 that was attended by comrades from across the zone. This was led by our own Lisa Glanville, Zone Sergeant-at-Arms. Comrades Rick McDonald. Linda Bird, Anne Exel and Norm Dobson attended the District Convention held in Guelph this past weekend. Saturday euchre saw Lloyd and Lillian Appleby place first Tim Dilworh and Vi Houze placed second and Erma Brighton and Helen Dobson took third. Delores Howatt was ladies' lone hand winner while Ross Duncan won the men's prize. There is a silent auction this weekend.
