Spring beckons Scouts outdoors The arrival of spring weather has benefited all Blyth Sections of scouting as more activities are planned for the outdoors. In March the Beavers enjoyed an evening of bowling. For Easter the Leaders planned an Easter egg hunt that was great fun. On April 6, the Colony enjoyed an evening hike, and planned a campfire at the home of Beaver Leader 'Rusty' (Lisa deGans) for April 13. The third-year Beavers attended the Regional White Tail Day at Listowel District Secondary School April 10 for a full day of crafts, games, stories, songs and good fun. After testing their Kub Kar racing skills at a regular meeting, most of the Blyth Cubs competed against Cubs from other Groups at the Huron District Kub Kar Rally March 13 in Zurich. Every boy was proud of his own accomplishment no matter how well his car placed. As part of the linking between Cubs and Scouts the third-year Cubs attended a Scout meeting in March to get an insight into the Troop program and activities. All Cubs constructed a camp chair with the help of Nancy and Gerald Hakkers, and collected non- perishable food, used clothing and toys as part of the requirements for the purple star. Scouts held one meeting at Barb and Ray Storey's sugar bush during the maple syrup season. As part of the requirement for the World Conservation badge some of the Scouts did a presentation on woodlot management. In preparation for a wilderness canoe trip the first weekend in May the Troop is working on outdoor skills, such as topography and the wilderness code of ethics. All Sections are looking forward to the opportunity to plant trees in April as part of the National Wild Turkey Federation's ongoing plan to improve wildlife habitat and to establish tree corridors between woodlots. The annual 1st Blyth Scouting Bake Sale and Bottle Drive will be held May 8. Homemade baking will be for sale in front of Memorial Hall from 9 a.m. until noon. Auburn, Blyth and Londesboro will be canvassed to collect returnable bottles. Also this year the Cubs will be selling hot dogs and pop in the parking lot across from the post office from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. This is the last major fundraiser of the Scouting year, which wraps up at the end of May with the Huron District Camp at Benmiller. Thompson reaps bumper crop of memories Pancake Breakfast Truck of treasures Director Paul Thompson’s research for his Death of a Hired Man, has brought in a truck full of well-worn pitchforks and pounds of pulleys, all generously donated to be used in the Blyth Festival production which opens, Sept. 2._____________________________________ _ Kathy’s Korner By Kathy Bromley Who knows best about their own community than the people who live there? April 21 (tonight) in Bainton's Art Gallery at Memorial Hall at 7:30 p.m., the monthly Community Policing Committee meeting will be held. Everyone is welcome to attend. This will give the public a better idea of what the committee and meetings are all about and input would be appreciated. Come out to meet Const. Dell Mercey, the liaison between the police and the committee. Any questions you may have will be dealt with. Remember you cannot say anything about something if you have absolutely no idea of what it is all about. This evening will give you the opportunity to meet all the representatives from the villages of Blyth and Brussels (who have the Mobile Watch Units), along with the Twps. of Howick, Tumberry, East Wawanosh, Morris and Grey. Let's show the other areas the enthusiasm Blyth has! CORRECTION "If you're gonna do a play about thrashing you got to make sure you get the costumes right." Hardly what director Paul Thompson expected to begin his research interview, but obviously very useful. "I don’t want to see those one piece outfits," his host adds, "you know the ones that mechanics wear." Thompson was in Seaforth with Tom Kale, Lou Rowland and Frank Bruxer, old colleagues from the threshing circuit, and he was getting a complete education - everything you wanted to know about bam and stook threshing but were afraid to ask. He was delighted that these seasoned threshers' memories were so vivid that the events they were reliving could have happened yesterday. His visit was supposed to last an hour. It lasted closer to three. Thompson came away with wonderful stories. That’s what the director/creator of The Farm Show, 1837 and Barndance Live! is doing these days, driving the gravel roads of All the stories farmers tell Thompson will feed back into the writing and rehearsal process for a new play about the threshing era for the Blyth Festival's silver anniversary season.
