OPP lay down law — on bike helmets The Huron Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is concerned about the number of youths who were involved in numerous bicycle collisions during 1998. Some of these collisions resulted in serious injuries and fatalities. Starting April 15, members of the Huron OPP will be enforcing bicycle legislation by laying charges against violators across the county. The bicycle is a vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act, therefore it must have a light on one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise. Secondly, a warning device must be on all bicycles. Thirdly, every person under 18 years of age who rides on a bicycle must wear a proper helmet that before anyone rides their bicycle. Helmets come in different shapes and sizes and cyclists should shop for one that fits. The helmet must sit level and square on the head, feel snug and not move around. Once a helmet that fits has been found, the sizing pads can fine tune the fit. If a helmet has been involved in a collision, it's done its job and needs to be replaced. ‘■Seventy-five per cent of all bicycle-related fatalities result from head injuries. Helmets can reduce cycling-related head injuries by up to 85 per cent. Buy a bright colour for visibility. You want motorists and other cyclists to see you. Parents can promote helmet use by wearing a helmet themselves. The rule should be no helmet, no bike. Sr. Const. Don Shropshall said, "Many citizens have phoned us to say they wish to see these rules enforced. The Huron OPP will be enforcing the legislation starting on April 15. Parents are being warned that charges will be laid. Youth of 16 and 17 years of age will receive the ticket themselves. Parents will be issued tickets for their children under 16 years of age. Huron OPP will be giving violators one chance to have the ticket quashed by the parent and child or youth attend a bicycle safety seminar." "Through the proper use of your bicycle and obeying the rules of the road, you'll get there safely and be healthier too. Please wear your helmet and save yourself some money," said Shropshall.
