For the last 24 years the Blyth Festival has presented plays that reflect the concerns and culture of rural Ontario. Some of the shows were a very direct recreation of our heritage - Mostly in Clover in year one celebrated the contribution of Irish settlers, The Blood is Strong the Scots, This Foreign Land, the Dutch and Quiet in the Land, the German Amish. A few times the Festival tackled very current and controversial issues in The School Scandal about a county teachers strike and in Another Season's Promise about the farm crisis of the 80s. Everybody knows Paul Thompson and Ted Johns put cows and chickens on the stage. Festival writers have come from Blyth, Clinton, Seaforth and Mitchell almost as often as they've come from major centres. The actual main streets of Clinton and Seaforth have been depicted on Blyth’s stage, and local houses and bams have inspired many sets. This year Big Box, The Great School Crisis of '99 and Death of a Hired Man will continue those traditions. preceded by the opening of the Blyth Festival Art Gallery's Community Art Exhibition.
