Festival plans anniversary celebration
Theatre, by its very nature, is a
celebration of community - artists
and audience in collaboration. For
the last 24 years the Blyth Festival
has presented plays that reflect the
concerns and culture of rural
Ontario.
Some of the shows were a very
direct recreation of our heritage -
Mostly in Clover in year one
celebrated the contribution of Irish
settlers, The Blood is Strong the
Scots, This Foreign Land, the
Dutch and Quiet in the Land, the
German Amish.
A few times the Festival tackled
very current and controversial
issues in The School Scandal about
a county teachers strike and in
Another Season's Promise about
the farm crisis of the 80s.
Everybody knows Paul
Thompson and Ted Johns put cows
and chickens on the stage.
Festival writers have come from
Blyth, Clinton, Seaforth and
Mitchell almost as often as they've
come from major centres. The
actual main streets of Clinton and
Seaforth have been depicted on
Blyth’s stage, and local houses and
bams have inspired many sets.
This year Big Box, The Great
School Crisis of '99 and Death of a
Hired Man will continue those
traditions.

where patrons will have an
opportunity to meet the artists.
Throughout the evening, patrons

Audiences from this region have
delighted in seeing their lives
reflected from the stage and have
given the Blyth Festival incredible
support that has allowed the theatre
to flourish for a quarter of a
century.
Now it's the Festival's turn to
applaud and celebrate the various
communities by inviting them to a
party with friends and neighbours.
Each week of the summer season
will be dedicated to a geographical
area. On one special night of each
week, towns and townships will be
recognized from the stage.
A community corporate partner
will greet audience members from
the designated area at a post-show

Brass Rings spring concert,
inspired by the concept of song and
dance, will be performed at the
Heritage Theatre in Wingham on
Sunday, April 8 at 2 p.m.
This group performed their
Christmas repertoire in Lucknow
this past year to a full house.
The first half of the show will be
the most serious, with one piece
(Landes by Jan Bach) from the
brass quintet "chamber music”
repertoire. Other pieces are
madrigals, excerpts from ballet
both light and dramatic,
transcriptions from opera, both
dramatic and comic, and in part of
the second half they wax
philosophical in pondering the
"dance of the spheres".
Sprinkled among these are a few
Broadway numbers including some
from West Side Story and a comet
solo based on the folksy tune
Believe Me If All Those Endearing
