This competition will allow the Ambassadors to gain experience for the Canadian National Exhibition Ambassador of the Fairs Competition which will be held Aug. 20 - 22. To be eligible to compete in the CNE Competition the Ambassadors must compete in at least one competition, (besides their own fair), prior to the event. Since most other competitions are for females only, District #8 has sought to overcome this by providing a new competition. Starting four years ago females and males were able to compete at their local fair competitions. Hence the change from "Queen" to "Ambassador". This year there are 96 Ambassadors in Ontario, five of which are male. This number is increasing every year. Presently, in OAAS District #8, there are 11 Ambassadors out of the 15 fairs: Cynthia De Wit, Brussels; Julie Hearn, Exeter; $124.50; 500 - 599 lbs., $102 to $129; 600 - 699 lbs., $104 to $123; 700 - 799 lbs., $97 to $112; 800 - 899 lbs., $97 to $109.75; 900 lbs. and over, $84.50 to $101.50. Plain stockers sold $48 to $65. Melanie Crete, Hensall South Huron; Melissa Noble, Howick- Turnberry; Barbie Miller, Huron Central; Lindsay Matheson, Listowel; Cathy Westman, Milverton; Tracey Pfeifer, Mitchell and District; Elsa Pihl, St. Marys; Sarah McLellan, Seaforth and Amy Wybrow, Stratford and District. At the District #8 Ambassador of the Fair Competition the Ambassadors will participate in various activities such as farm tours, seminars, interviews, rehearsal and evening competition. The successful Ambassador's duties will include attending all fairs within District #8. There has been plenty of time and effort put into the organization of this competition. The Brussels Agricultural Society along with all other Societies involved are supporting this event. The OAAS District #8 is inviting the public to attend the Ambassador of the Fair Competition which will be held on Saturday, April 24 at the Crystal Palace, Mitchell starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $2 at the door. Pork industry agrees on formula A new price discovery mechanism to derive Ontario's daily base price for live hogs sold in the province has been established. Ontario Pork, Maple Leaf Pork, Quality Meat Packers Ltd. and the Ontario Independent Meat Packers and Processors have jointly agreed on this new formula. The new system uses the National Base Lean Hog Carcass Slaughter Cost (National Cost) report from the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Services (AMS) to determine the base value of Ontario's hogs. The National Cost represents 30 per cent of the total U.S. negotiated slaughter sales. The daily Ontario base price in dollars per 100 kilogram dressed weight at the 100 index will be calculated as follows: Closing National Cost lean hog price using the 51-52 per cent basis, multiplied by the United States dressing percentage of 74 per cent, converted to kilogram, multiplied by the noon Bank of Canada Exchange Rate, divided by the Canadian dressing percentage of 80 per cent, divided by the Divisor 1.1195. Ontario's old pricing mechanism was based on the Indiana-Illinois live price as reported by the USDA. That system was no longer appropriate because it represents less than eight per cent of all hogs produced in the United States. The USDA has also indicated they plan to discontinue reporting the Indiana-Illinois live price. "We are confident the National Cost price is more reflective of the North American market," remarked Don Collis, Vice President and General Manager, Fresh Meats Business, Quality Meat Packers Ltd. "The price is determined from a very diversified market which represents a significant volume of the U.S. slaughter and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange use this price to settle their future contracts." "We agree that this base price does not provide U.S. equivalency. It is intended to replace what we all know as 100 per cent of the old Ontario formula. The total compensation package available to producers through multiples of the base price and grid premiums achieves that equivalency," stated Pat Jones, president, Maple Leaf Pork. "The new mechanism will more accurately determine the price paid for hogs produced in this province," says Paul Knechtel, chief executive officer, Ontario Pork. "We feel that the diverse geographical area that the National Cost price represents potentially helps to minimize daily and long term price fluctuations."
