Dance at the hall on the fourth Hockey mom responds to letter THE EDITOR, On March 27 Brussels Pre-Tykes were invited to participate in a tournament in Lucknow and paid the entry fee for that privilege. An article from The Citizen, headlined "Brussels trounced Lucknow" was displayed on the doors opening onto the ice surface beside the schedule of games for the day. A comment similar to "What happened to having fun playing hockey” was written beside the article. This was a very humiliating display for Brussels parents. We had nothing to do with the original article in the paper, and we felt this was certainly "unsportsman-like” conduct. The author of The North Huron Citizen's "Letter to the Editor" March 31/99 was within her right to respond to The Citizen for the article that was printed. However Writer commends county THE EDITOR, County council has approved the proposed geophysical survey to find grave sites on the Huronview property, in the old House of Refuge cemetery. The area to be discovered is the original layout of the graveyara, which contains at least 124 burials of county home residents named on the cairn. Interments ceased at the site in 1929. In 1931 Huron County council voted to fence the graveyard, erect a cairn, and give the place perpetual care. The perimeter was lined with pine trees. The area then enclosed was the entire cemetery. At some later time, the area was cleared and the boundaries lost. The white picket fence which enclosed the cairn and a smaller section (five meters by five meters) within the cemetery, was apparently erected in the 1960s. This was the fence removed along with the cairn in October 1998. It is a credit to our present county council that they have chosen to have this survey done to reclaim the proper boundaries of the burial ground. The next item should be erecting a boundary barrier and rebuilding the memorial cairn, as provided for under the terms of the Cemetery Act. Lest anyone raise the subject of cost, and somebody usually does, I would like to point out that our county has received annual rent revenue on the surrounding farmland at Huronview for some Friday of each month. April meeting is a free day. Cards were played. Winners were: ladies' high, Marjorie Anderson; ladies' lone hands Cyclist hurt in accident On April 1 at approximately 12:15 p.m. a motorcycle collision took place at the intersection of County Rd. 4 and County Rd. 7 in Tumberry Twp. The driver, Aubin Ross, 20, of RR 1, Formosa was northbound on a 1999 Honda 600 cc motorcycle, which he had just purchased within the last hour and was on his way home. He lost control and entered the east ditch striking a culvert before when a hockey association hosts a tournament and invites paying teams to that tournament it does not give them the right to make another team feel less than proud of their accomplishments and guilty for having won hockey games. By displaying that article and making an issue out of it, we as Brussels parents felt exactly that. Brussels Pre-Tykes have a total of nine players this year, we are struggling with numbers. Of the nine, four are second year and five are first year-players. Some of the first-year players could just stand on the ice when they started last October. Excellent coaching coupled with a fundament approach to good skating skills, gave our team a definite edge this year for this particular age level. There was no harm intended years; last year alone this income was over $9,000. This would go a long way toward paying for a new cairn. Duncan & Rutherford Environ mental have made a very generous offer to donate their time and skills to do the surface survey of the cemetery side. They are also arranging for the loan of the geo physical equipment, asking only that the county pay a few hundred dollars to cover shipping and insurance. This instrumental rental would normally cost several times that. We* should all appreciate this public-spirited action. With practical help, arising out of common sense and cultural interest, things can be accomplished, even in these lean darkening ages. We shall shortly have the rare opportunity to see how such a survey is conducted. I am sure county council and many citizens will be quite interested, as the Stone Angels will be, to see this active investigation of history right here in our own backyard. Sincerely, Reg Thompson. Ross slid across the road into the north ditch. The Wingham Fire Service and the local ambulance attended at the scene. He was taken to Wingham & District Hospital, then transferred to the London Health & Science Centre with an injury to his wrist. The investigation continues with charges pending. Police said it appears at this time that the cause may have been inexperience. from that original article, it was written in a Brussels-area paper for a Brussels-area team, nothing more, nothing less. Furthermore there wasn't anything negative said about the Lucknow team other than the fact they lost. Lucknow has a local paper. Did it report the game? The cold hard fact is, hockey is a highly competitive sport. We as parents and coaches encourage these players to be competitive simply by dressing them in equipment and putting them on the ice to play. The main objective of the sport is to take the puck and put it in the other team's net. It is what the players are taught from day one. Perhaps this Lucknow parent has had a short exposure to the game of hockey. In a few years she may realize that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. The bottom line is, it really doesn't matter what anyone says or writes about your team as long as they have given their best. Jacquie Gowing and Proud Parents 1998/99 Brussels Pre-Tykes.
