From the Minister’s Study
Christians Easter people, says minister
Rev. Cathrinc Campbell
Melville Presbyterian, Brussels
Knox, Belgrave
I have been the lucky recipient of
a pin that says "Chocolate Bunnies
Accepted Here". However. I also
want to report that of today's date
of writing I have received
absolutely none. I haven't found
any at the Post Office Bunny either
but I am still optimistic.
So what has that to do with
Easter? Everything and nothing.
For if your view of Easter is that it
is only a time of giving and
receiving candy and flowers,
usually in pastel colours, or the
marker in the calendar that signals
spring, then indeed you will feel
that I have been shortchanged.
If your view of Easter is a time of
reflection, giving thanks and
celebrating the most amazing acts
of love, with an open and happy
heart then you can accept the candy
and flowers, a generous gift and all
those signs of spring as a bonus but
not the essential meaning of this
most Holy time of year.
For Easter is the essential, pivotal
event in the Christian calendar,
though many think that Christmas
is that event. But we are as
Christians "Easter People" for it is

Bidding for bargains
Brusselites and neighbours packed Melville Presbyterian
Church Friday night for the time, talent and treasure
auction. While auctioneer Kevin McArter, left, asks for
bids, Mary Carr parades the objects around the room. Jeff
Cardiff detailed the items for sale.
Holy Week commences with
Palm Sunday and ends with Easter
Sunday. In Mexico, we are told that
commerce and industry practically
cease for the whole of Holy Week.
In North America, Canada and
United States, Holy Week is more
of an adjunct than a focus for
which we are probably poorer. For
this is a time to reflect on the
greatest events in world history and
to give thanks that they happened.
In taking that time you will be
richer in mind and spirit.
This year I urge you, if you are
not already planning to do so, to
join with the other members of this
community who will be celebrating
in their congregations. Come to
reflect on Good Friday and to
celebrate on Easter Sunday. You
will find a warm welcome from
new and old friends and join in the
thanksgiving.
Jesus Christ is Risen today!
