The board also heard last night from Keith Elston, president of the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair, which has been operating for 78 years with board funding. He said the fair brings together more than 300 students from three communities to compete in different educational areas and is the only school fair still in existence in Ontario. It must now also apply for its $900 annual budget which the board has traditionally funded. "If you as trustees cannot ensure the board's uniqueness, then what is your role?" Elston asked the board. Brugger said former education director Paul Carroll identified the girls band and the Belgrave, Blyth and Brussels School Fair as Huron County's two "sacred cows" and added "if it appears the sacred cows must now be slaughtered, can you at least have a barbecue and help raise some money for us." Rachlis said the board will begin distributing application forms for funding in April but said "it's premature" to discuss the total amount of funding the board will have available for groups.
