Hemingway key in PeeWee championship The Brussels PeeWees came home champs after playing in an OMHA tournament in Howick this past Sunday. Their first game was a 5-0 white­ wash of Normanby. It looked as if it would be much closer with both teams kept off the board in the first period. But Brussels broke loose in the second to score three. Joel Hemingway bulged the twine with Pre-Tykes take two in Lucknow tourney It was an exciting weekend for area Pre-Tyke teams as they trav­ elled to Lucknow for the year-end tournament. While not held to determine a champion, each of the competing teams had the opportunity to play two games throughout the day, March 27. Brussels Pre-Tykes met Howick for a 10 a.m. matchup. Blyth secured the win in the third when Kirk Stewart took a pass from C. Stewart at the 12:21 mark. Cody Anderson guarded the net for Blyth. The coaches for the PeeWees were Chad Haggitt, Mike Haggitt and Doug McClinchey. assists from Kyle Stephenson and Jonathon Engel. Hemingway then turned around to set up Stephenson for goal number two, who later passed it on to Engel who lit the light for the third time. Hemingway, assisted by Tyler Campbell scored in the third to put the team up by four, then in the dying minutes Scott Armstrong, with Hemingway drawing the assist scored the final goal. both played a good 45 minutes of hockey though Brussels outscored their opponent. Ryan Baker opened the scoring at 43:45 and was followed by a netter from Morgan Deitner. Shea McLean earned the assist. Ten minutes into the game, Ty Sebastian tallied a natural hattrick, earning the first on a solo effort then taking passes from Christo- available and Bemy Nymeyer CIM, FCSI of RBC Dominion Securities, on Saturday, June 5 at the M.itchell Golf Club. 1999 Golf Privilege Cards are valid throughout the entire 1999 golf season and make perfect birthday, Mother's day or Father's Day, graduation and other special occasion gifts! Novice Reps lose 2, tie 1 The Blyth Novice Rep squad completed its five-game series against Clifford, suffering two loss­ es and a tie in the past week. The first contest, March 24, was a very tight game, going into overtime to determine a winner. Clifford began the scoring at 1:22 of the first with Blyth’s Brittany Peters evening the score seconds later. Blyth captured the lead in the sec­ ond period when A. Peters took a pass from Tony Bean for the goal. The teams traded goals in the third, finishing regulation time with a 4-4 tie. Third period goals for Brussels were scored by A. Peters and Richard Gregg. Kendall Whitfield earned three assists in the game. Tied 0-0 after regulation time, the teams went into overtime. Still tied after five minutes, they played a sudden death shootout. Both shooters scored the first time, with Hemingway earning the point for Brussels. The second time was a miss on both sides, then each found the net on the third attempt. pher Becker and Deitner for the others. At the 23-minute mark, Sebastian passed to Nick Gowing for a score. Gowing notched another two min­ utes later. Gavin Bowers scored the first of three halfway through the contest with Sebastian adding five more and Gowing one. Deitner earned two more assists. Defensive work by Conner Smith and Danny Donkers kept the puck away from the Brussels net. Good goaltending from Howick stopped several break-aways by the Brussels skaters. After warming up in their first game, Brussels had a very strong match against Belmore in the after­ noon. Though Belmore notched a goal in the very early going, Brussels regained the lead and held on. Improved passing skills helped the team move the puck around. Bowers tallied the first two goals, taking a pass from Gowing and Sebastian for the first and Deitner for the second. The strong skating and scoring abilities of Sebastian, and Bowers with just 19 seconds left. The teams met again March 25 for an equally difficult contest. Though Blyth netted the puck first, when Blake Hesselwood passed to A. Peters, Clifford took the lead after two quick goals before the end of the period. A Gregg goal evened the score before Clifford regained the lead just before the buzzer. Down 3-2 going into the third, Hesselwood and A. Peters each slid one over the line to bring the score to 4-3 before Clifford added one more. The overtime period was score­ less, Clifford came to Blyth, March 26 for the final game. The hometowners were unable to get one past the netminder and were downed 2-0. Devon Blake did the job for Brus­ sels. Fourth and fifth shooters for both came up donuts. On the sixth try Robbie McClure put one between the pipes for Brussels, while Mildmay's shot was blocked by Brook Wheeler. .Coaches applauded the team on their effort and Wheeler for her great goaltending. In the championship game, Brus- allowed them to rack up seven each. Gowing tipped in two. Deitner added three with Baker sliding in one. Becker and McLean scored their first goals of the season on nice set­ ups from Sebastian and Gowing. Becker popped in three and McLean added two. Other assists in the game went to Sebastian (four), Gowing (two), Becker (two), Baker, Deitner, Donkers and Bowers. Smith's work along the boards helped keep the puck in play. Tournament ends Atom Rep season The Brussels Atoms Reps took to the ice in Mildmay last week as they participated in the double-elimina­ tion tournament. The met the strong host team, March 25, and good goaltending by Kyle Gibson and Jeff Elliott kept Brussels in the game. They were downed 6-0. - . Chris Corbett was named Brus­ sels' player of the game. Brussels was challenged by Pais­ ley in the consolation round and took a 1-0 lead into the third period. Greg Bowers scored the netter on a play with Corbett and Adam McClure. On the strength of better play, Brussels outscored Paisley 4-2 in the final frame, capturing the 5-2 win. Third period goals were scored by Josh Albrechtas. With Hemingway scoring all three Brussels goals, the team took this one by two. The turning point came when Wheeler stopped Innis- fLl on a penalty shot midway through the second period. Assists went to McClure, Bran­ don Blake, Stephenson, Sean Hoegy and Tyler Campbell. Coaching staff said it was an excellent tournament play by all and outstanding goaltending with only one goal allowed in three games. The previous week the team played in Goderich's Young Cana­ da Week tournament. Ih game one Brussels beat Ilder- ton 2-0 with goals from Heming­ way and Evan Horst. Engel and Robbie Semple got the assists. Game two against Tara was a narrow 3-2 victory. Hemingway, Horst and Campbell were the goalscorers in this effort while Blake got two assists and Heming­ way one. In the semi-final game, Ripley downed Brussels 5-1. Hemingway notched the lone marker, with an assist from Campbell. Stephenson and McClure. Adam Corbett and White earned assists. White was named player of the game for Brussels. Brussels' run in the tournament ended with a game against Zurich when they were defeated 5-2. The team fell behind 3-0 before getting one over the line late in the first period. White took a pass from Albrechtas for the score. White put one past the goalie at 12:02 of the third to draw to within one, but the squad could not hold off Zurich. Andrew McDonald got the assist on White's second netter. Cory Chapman was named player of the game. This loss eliminated Brussels from the tournament and ended their season.
