THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31,1999. 3HT Sport^" Novices lose D contest The long and short of it Fun, laughter and a really good time was the name of the game Sunday afternoon when the Blyth Bantams took on the Blyth Beginners in a hilarious matchup. With the Bantams using collector-size hockey sticks which are less than two foot long, the Beginners definitely had a reach advantage. ■, Brussels and Ripley Novice Reps played off against each other in game four with Ripley footing the bill tor WOAA referees last Wednesday night. The first period was end-to-end play with nobody able to get past either goal tenders. Ripley started the scoring with only two minutes left in the second period and blasted another quick goal past 22 seconds later. Not to be outdone, Chris Corbett received an awesome pass from Christopher Jutzi in front of the net and put their first goql in with only 16 seconds left in the period. Ripley had to wait until 4.38 in the third period before getting lucky again. Brussels scored with only 38 seconds left in the game when Jutzi scored on a pass from Adam Corbett. Time ran out and Brussels was unable to put another goal past the Ripley goalie. Ripley was awarded the "D" Division Championship trophy at the end of the game. After remaining unbeaten during the 98/99 hockey season the Pups decided they could take on a more seasoned team and challenged the Bantam Bulldogs to a game. The Bantams, OMHA finalists, were up for the venture, or so they thought. Before the game proceeded an equipment change was called for which brought many a Bantam to their knees. The referees, Don Scrimgeour and Rick Finch, kept the game as clean as possible, although the penalty box was always full. Pat Cronin, Beginner coach and goalie for this game, kept the scoring to a minimum of a lucky lone goal as he turned the Bantams away at the net numerous times taking quite a pounding for his efforts. The Beginners converted six goals against Ryan (The Cat) Lee to soundly trounce the Bantams. The Beginner team consists of Adam Cronin, Matt Chalmers, Grant Sparling, Kirby Cook, Lukas Witherspoon, Tyler Middegaal, Connor Prescott, Trevor Raynard, Scott Sippel, Tyler Black, Aaron and Matthew Popp, Tyler Stevenson and Colin Whitfield. Coaching staff includes Pat Cronin, Derek Cook, Jim Middegaal and Dwight Chalmers. The past year has been a great developing experience for the fans and players alike and one can only wonder what's in store for these boys in their hockey future! After the Beginner game loss the Bantams had an exhibition game against Teeswater where their losing streak continued. The final score was 7-5 in Teeswater's favour. Player of the game for Blyth was Paul Walker who posted a goal and three assists. In a hard-fought final series for the Blyth PeeWee local squad, the team was overtaken by Seaforth in the best-of-three contest. Blyth was victorious in the March 23 game when they won in overtime and were penalty free for the entire match. Neil Salverda opened the scoring, with the assistance of Mike Bean, only to see Seaforth tie it up sec onds later. Brett Bean was out of the game and the season, in the first period, after breaking his wrist. Bean popped one in off a pass from Tyler Kemighan at 5:20 of the second, but the teams went into the third tied at two. The tally seesawed through the third with the teams trading leads and tying the score. Blyth goals were scored by Cody Anderson, and Bean (two). Assists went to Lee Prescott and Anderson. Kemighan got the winner for Blyth at the 4:16 mark of overtime for the 6-5 victory. Blyth had a tougher lime slaying in the game, March 25, when they welcomed Seaforth to town. The visitors jumped out in front early and held onto a 3-0 lead through two. Blyth finally got on the board in the third when Anderson put one in the net. A goal by M. Bean drew Blyth to within one, but they were unable to continue the attack, losing 4-2. Darren Austin earned an assist. With the series tied at one each, the teams met March 27 in Seaforth. Blyth went into the second period behind 1 -0, but quickly took a tem porary lead. M. Bean popped in two, with Austin (two) and Prescott getting the assists. However, Seaforth netted two in the period to hold the lead. M. Bean dominated Blyth's scor ing, blasting two more in the third. Austin also earned his third assist. Salverda added a goal with M.Bean assisting, but it was not enough to hold off Seaforth. They scored three in the frame for the 6-5 win. -1 o -I < o Q LU 0.
