Bean seeds were planted in a shoebox with only a hole at one end of the box. They will observe and record what happens as the bean plant grows. The class is presenting their energy design projects. They have made boats with windup propellers, twirlers and cars and boats moved by wind. The first month of Snuggle up and Read is ending on Feb. 11. Christy, Ken and Laura's oldest daughter has been living in Russia for a year and a half attending Moscow State University. She also had a job there teaching English. They thought that since they more or less had a tour guide there they would fly over, which they did, in July. They were impressed by the beautiful ornate buildings of Red Square. In Russia the colour red is seen a lot. Red means beautiful. There were all kinds of cathedrals but they never saw anyone attend them. They learned that there are no laundromats there or washing machines except for the very wealthy, so laundry is done by hand. During the summer months the hot water is shut off. They were amazed at the parking, one could park anywhere and anytime. If they went to a restaurant they could park right up on the sidewalk. There were no meters and if you were pulled over for speeding you weren't given a ticket, you had to pay right there. They saw lots of unused land but the government still owns it so nothing is being done. They saw no farm machinery and no herds of cattle. There was a pipeline going in and it was all being dug by hand. There weren't many taxis but you could stop any car and ask to be driven to your destination and dicker for the price. A highlight was going to Peter the Greats' summer palace. They had to wear little cloth sandals over their shoes so as not to damage any of the flooring. There were beautiful fountains everywhere. Vodka was very cheap and a person could drink anywhere at anytime. Laura said that they didn't understand personal space. One time Ken was in the bank and a man was looking over his shoulder watching his every move. There were no lineups, people just shoved to get onto buses, etc. She said that they almost missed the bus once because they were being so polite not wanting to push anyone. People didn't smile a lot, but once you talked to them they were very happy to talk with you. They attended Bolshoi Theatre and watched Swan Lake. The theatre has six balconies with red velvet seats and gold trimmings. The theatre holds 2,155 people and there were chandeliers all over. The main one was close to 20 feet in diameter. The trip was an eye-opener for the couple and Laura said she would love to go back again to explore more of the countryside. It is an old country, a place full of history dating back to the 1100s. They found that the streets and many buildings were in a state of disrepair. People owned the insides of the building but no one owned the outside, thus they didn't get fixed up. Laura brought back some artisan crafts, such as hand-carved dolls brightly painted and some matriushka dolls (stacking dolls) and other very interesting items.
