UCW, guests enjoy supper
The general meeting of the
Belgrave UCW was held on
Thursday, Jan. 28. President Muriel
Coultes welcomed the large
gathering of members and guests
who then all enjoyed a delicious
potluck supper.
Following supper the president
read a poem entitled "The Rose".
Musical entertainment was
supplied by Colleen VanCamp who
sang two numbers.
The slate of officers for 1999
which was presented during the
November meeting was then
installed by Rev. Mary Jane
Hobden.
The worship service was
conducted by Wilma Higgins,
Edith Vincent and Mary Hunter.
Mrs. Higgins gave the call to
worship followed by prayer led by
Mrs. Hunter.
'Tis Winter Now, the Fallen Snow
was sung, accompanied by Freda
Johnston at the piano.
The theme of the meditation was
signs - signs from God, signs to
Skater takes gold, bronze
Bill and Muriel Coultes attended
St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church,
Molesworth on Sunday, Jan. 24
where Lisa Matheson, their
granddaughter, was taking part in
the morning service.
Prior to the service Lisa had
skated to a Jr. Bronze Freeskate
medal at 8:15 a.m. at COS
Westskate '99 at the Drayton arena.
She then returned to the arena for
the team elements, Junior Bronze,
at 1:45 p.m. The Wallace team won
the Bronze medal as well. She
skated a solo dance at 3 p.m. and
was fourth.

The Belgrave Steelers Industrial
Hockey Team entered the Lucknow
Industrial Hockey Tournament
during the Jan. 30 weekend. The
team got off to a slow start but
regrouped to capture the double B
championship against the Listowel
Bull Dogs on Sunday, Jan. 31 at
2 p.m.
MVP award went to Kirk
Whitfield for the winning goal in a
Residents play games
There were seven tables of
euchre in play at the Women's
Institute Hall on Wednesday, Jan.
27.
Winners were: high lady, Aileen
Leddy; second high lady, Alice
Nicholson; lone hands, Lois
Chamney; low lady, Ruth Johnston;
high man, Mary Taylor; second
high man, George Michie; lone
hands, Ross Taylor; low man,
Allan Edgar.
The next euchre is Wednesday,
Feb. 3 at 8 p.m.
The seniors' bowling scores for
Wednesday, Jan. 27 were: Doris
Remington, 159, 152; Ivy Cloakey,
120, 102; Doris Walden, 91, 204;
Evelyn Galbraith, 129, 149;
symbolize God’s power and signs
of hope in the community.
Mrs. Coultes then introduced
Ross and Barbara Anderson and
Donna and Les Shaw who showed
slides of their two-week holiday to
Ireland.
A business meeting followed.
Louise Bosman presented the
budget for 1999. Thank yous for
the Christmas remembrances were
received from Mildred Vannan,
May Rinn, Helen and Lewis
Stonehouse, Sara Anderson, Alice
Scott and Janisa Coultes. The
annual meeting of London
Conference is April 26-27 in Sault
Ste. Marie. Other dates to
remember included the April 19 -
April event in Mitchell; Feb. 8,
Huron Perth Presbytery annual
meeting in Centralia; May 20, the
next general meeting of Belgrave
UCW; July 17 and Sept. 11, Blyth
Festival suppers.
More turkey pies will be made to
use up leftover turkey.
Lenstead skated to a gold medal on
Saturday for their Junior Bronze
shadow dance. Janice and Laura
skated in the family dance at 2 p.m.
Sunday and were fifth among the
skaters. An hour later Laura skated
again and received fourth for her
Junior Bronze solo dance.
To close out their competitions
Lisa skated again and won the
bronze medal for her Junior Silver
Solo Dance.
The competition represents at
least 10 clubs in the Central
Ontario Arena. The Matheson
family skate out of the Wallace
Figure Skating Club.
3-2 decision.

J. McGee hosts United service
The congregation of Calvin-
Brick United Church held the
Sunday worship service for the
month of January at the home of
Jessie McGee at the regular time of
10 a.m.
On Sunday, January 24 service
was held at 2 p.m. followed with
lunch prior to the annual meeting of
the congregation. Rev. Mary Jane
Hobden called the meeting to order
with a "Litany For the Annual
Meeting" and chaired the business
with Ivan Dow appointed secretary.
Joan Pederson reported for the
book examiners stating, all is in
order.
Calvin-Brick's share of the
pastoral charge budget was
accepted.
Jim McGee gave the report of the
nominating committee which was

asked the children who most often
gets their own way in their home.
The replies were Dad, "because he
is the boss", and the older people.
"It doesn't matter if we are big or
small, weak or strong, we are all
special to God," Rev. Hobden said.
"God created us all to do something
special like sharing God's love.
Joyce Vincent and Doreen Marks
took up the offering.
The sermon was based on God is
love for all. Rev. Hobden said
"God is met in special places such
as the beach, or top of a mountain.
