Riders have a blast at snowcross
Warm weather conditions leading
up to the weekend had many people
wondering if the third round of the
Ontario Snowcross Championship
would actually be run.
After a concerted effort by the
track crew involving trucking many
yards of snow and a hard overnight
freeze, the track was not only ready
but by all reports "a real blast" to
race on. A wonderful sunny day
drew an enthusiastic crowd of
spectators, and racers away from the
Super Bowl prelims. The racing
was close and intense.
In the novice class Jamie
Bennewies (Dublin) and Chris
Siemon (Brodhagen) went one-two
in both the under 500cc and over
500cc finals, carrying on the
domination they exhibited in round
two.
In the under 500cc Jeff Sobol
(Ariss), Jerry Searle (Seaforth) and
Nick Aitken (Fergus) filled out the
top five.
In the over 500cc group Chris
Tyndall (Clinton) made several
spectacular charges to the front, but
mistakes cost him the lead. Chris
Dejong (Lucknow) parlayed his
considerable motocross skills into a
fourth place. He was followed by
Mark Rennir (Stouffville).
It was obvious in practice that the
pro classes would be exciting and
they certainly put on a great
performance as they showed the
novices how it's done by launching
60 - 70 feet off the jumps and
double jumping the roughest
"whoop" sections. Matt Sobol
(Ariss) and Tim Rempel (Stratford)
were models of consistency
finishing one-two in the under 400
and the Pro open and two-three in
the over 500.
It was not without competition as
Ron Ashley (Fergus) rode like a
man possessed but made enough
mistakes to end up fourth in under
500, third in Pro open and hung on
for first in over 500.
While all that was going on
Jeremy Saville (Stratford) snuck in
for fourth in both over 500 and
open classes and Jason Konarski
(Blyth) bagged third in under 500
in his first pro event. Gordon Wolfe
Dobbinton rounded out the top five
in both over 500 and under 500.
/ „Dylan Kaelin (Port Franks) and
Tiffany Saville (Stratford) gave a
demonstration of determination as
they scooted around the track on
their "kitty cats" during a break in
the program.
Remaining rounds of this series
will be run at Motopark near
Williamsford north of Durham on
Feb. 21 and March 7.
