PeeWees advance to semi-final match It was a romp for the Blyth Pcc- Wccs as they completed their best- of-three quarter final series against Belmore. The squad hit the ice in Belmore, Jan. 26, prepared to end the series. They jumped into the lead quick­ ly when Cole Stewart blasted one in at 14:14 with Steve VanAmers- foort following up just a minute later. Belmore drew within one only to see Micah Loder's shot re-establish the two-goal margin. As the final five minutes of the first licked down, C. Stewart (two) and Loder added to the score. First period assists went to Loder, VanAmersfoort, T.J. Marks, Midgets win opener The Blyth Midget Bulldogs opened their defence as WOAA champions Sunday afternoon in Blyth against Lion's Head. The Bulldogs scored three, first- period goals and led 5-0 midway through the second frame. Lion's Head scored twice late in the second period to cut the lead to 5-2. Blyth played a defensive third and got some big saves from Dean Wilson in net for a scoreless Clinton whitewashes Tykes for second time On Saturday, Jan. 23 the Brussels Tykes were shutout for the second game in a row as Clinton blanked them 3-0. The tykes neglected to forecheck and created few good scoring chances. After a scoreless first half of the game Clinton scored three unanswered goals to ice the victory. Brock Spencer led the Clinton attack with two goals. On Saturday, Jan. 30 the Tykes hosted their rivals from Blyth. After a scoreless first period the Brussels Tykes found their scoring touch. Cody Subject was sent in alone, on a pass from Joel Wilkinson, to score on a Brussels wins close one In spite of numerous penalties in the first game of Round 1 of the WOAA playoffs, the Brussels Pee­ Wees took a slim victory over Zurich, Jan. 27. Though Zurich got on the board first, in the late minutes of the opening period, Brussels rebounded in the second, thanks to a hattrick from Joel Hemingway. Hemingway's three goals came four minutes apart, at 8:44, 4:39 and 38 seconds. Tyler Campbell was involved in each play and other assists went to Jonathon Engel, Scan Hocgy and Robbie McClure. Zurich pulled to within one al 2:50 of the third but was unable to C. STewart, Kirk Stewart and Trov­ er Koehler. Blyth did not slow down the attack in the second, extending their lead to 9-2. Goals went to VanAmersfoort, K. Sicwarl and Marks. C. Stewart and Brett Bean earned assists. Though Belmore kept even with Blyth for third-period goals, al three each, the visitors lead was insurmountable. Shots from Lee Prescott, Loder xmd VanAmersfoort gave the Blyth team at 12-5 victory. VanAmers- foorl lent a hand on the two other third-period markers. Blyth now advances to the WOAA semi-finals. period. Dave Ansley scored twice for Blyth with singles going to Kyle Anderson, Joel Arthur and Darrell McDougall. Assists went to Jamie Black, Matt McLellan, Joel Kellington, Steve Oldfield and K. Anderson. Blyth travels to Lion's Head Friday night for an 8:30 start, then is back in Blyth Sunday, at 3 p.m. The WOAA final is a three out of five series. breakaway. A minute and a half later Taylor Prior took a pass from Subject and scored to give Brussels a 2 - 0 lead. Subject got his second of the game converting a pass from Herbie Runstedler. Early in the third period Brendan Stretton one timed a nifty centering pass from Ben Gowing to give Brussels a 4-0 lead. Gowing completed the scoring by notching two goals in the last two minutes of the game. Stretton earned an assist on Gowing's second goal. Ryan Smith earned the shutout in the Brussels net. Next Saturday Brussels hosts Bayfield at 10 a.m. even the score. On Friday, Zurich came to town. Hemingway was first off the mark, scoring at 10:02 of the first. Engel assisted. The hometowners quickly boost­ ed their lead to 3-1 in the second. However, Zurich got fired up, pop­ ping in three more while keeping Brussels scoreless. The team was hampered by penalties as Brussels had players in the box seven limes to Zurich's three. Two of the four goals were scored on power plays. Zurich took the 4-3 win. The deciding game in the bcsl-of- three scries was held in Brussels Feb. 2. Atom Reps take it to the wire The Brussels Atom Reps look their playoff series against Zurich to the wire. The team travelled for the first game Jan. 25 and lost to the home squad 3-1. Brussels had the pres­ sure on in the first period, but Zurich's goalie made some stellar saves to hold them off. Despite great goaltending, split in the Brus­ sels net by Jeff Elliott and Kyle Gibson the hosts managed to sneak one past in every period. Tale Stephenson, assisted by Darcey Cook finally got Brussels on the board in the third, driving one between the pipes. But it was loo little, too late and the visitors returned home down by one game. On Jan. 27 Brussels had home ice advantage and nailed a close one 2- 1. Again goallending told the tale with solid efforts given between the pipes at both ends of the ice. Stephenson, assisted by Steven Ropp got it started in the first, then was followed minutes later by a shot from Matt White to pul his team up by two. Andrew McDon­ ald earned the assist. There was lots of nailbiting for Brussels fans as Zurich scored early in the third to bring them within one, but the home squad held on for the victory. Home again on Jan. 30, the Brus­ sels teams was all over Zurich for a 4-0 whitewash. White scored two in the first, with an assist to Josh Albrcchtas on the second one, while Chris Corbett lit the red lit twice in the third. McDonald assisted on the first Cor­ bett marker. It was a great team effort for three periods, with strong defensive work from Cory Chapman, Albrcchtas, Milch Blake and Tyler Jutzi. Gibson and Elliott shared the shutout. The one game scries lead was short lived, however, as Zurich beat them the next day al home 5-2. Albrcchtas and Corbett notched the Brussels goals. The deciding game in Zurich on Monday night was a heartbreaker. Brussels led with two goals until halfway through the third period when Zurich scored the tie-maker setting them up for what was a 3-2 victory and series win. Assistant Coach Randy White said, "The team played, a great game, but came up short. An unfor­ tunate bounce allowed Zurich to gain possession and score the win­ ner with 39 seconds left on the clock." Scoring for Brussels was Ropp with an assist by Albrechtas and Stephenson and Corbett, assisted by Cory Chapman.
