Duff’s United minister speaks on calling Campbell and Edith Wey were greeters at Duffs United Church on Jan. 24. Rev. James Murray welcomed everyone and announced that the annual meeting will be next Sunday. The worship service will begin at 11:30 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch. Rev. Murray called the young people up to watch the baptism of Lucas Godkin, infant son of Bruce and Katrin Godkin. The Sunday School presented a banner to the baby. Then Rev. Murray asked the children to think about how they treat someone really close to them and compare it to how they treat someone they dislike. "Our goal as peacemakers," he said, "is to treat everyone the way we treat our best friends, or someone very important to us." Then Rev. Murray showed the peace candle that was given to Duff's from another church in Waterloo which Doug and Marj Fraser attended when they were there. The candle originated from a church in Russia and it was passed on to England and Wales, Waterloo and Walton. Rev. Murray's sermon was called, "When I'm Calling You." In Matthew, Jesus calls fishermen Peter and Andrew. They simply walk away from their life's work and follow Jesus. They leave their People Neil and Marie McGavin have been busy all week as they attended the Toronto International Farm show. They were there promoting the International Plowing Match and Farm Machine show in Huron County in Sept. 99. Neil Williamson and Brian Werkema spent a week attending a New Holland service school in New Holland, PA. The UCW meeting will be Feb. 3 at 8:00. Guest speaker, Laura Scott, will be talking about her trip to Russia. Everyone is welcome to attend. If there are any Scouts or Guides interested in earning their "Religion in Life" badge, Rev. Jesus did not call everyone to leave everything every time he called them. Peter and Andrew did go back to their fishing boats three or four times over the course of the gospels. There was a real changing of characters throughout the four gospels. All these stories about Jesus calling people to become his disciples serve the same purpose. They show how to put faith into action. Jesus appears without invitation or warning. This was his way of showing how every situation can call for a faithful response. Rev. Murray said, "Jesus does not call us so we can admire him. Yes, they were allowed to chew gum while drawing a gumball machine. Goat puppets were made and some interesting stories about goats were read as well. The school and community welcomes new student Doug C. The Grade l/2s continued their study on energy and control. They made a tornado with water. They made a turbine movie with water and steam. They blew up a balloon using heat energy. Some of tne kids are sharing toys that run on different kinds of energy. Some of the toys convert energy to sound energy (batteries and wind up toys), light energy and kinetic (moving) energy. The 2/3s made some "Wild Toboggan Ride" stories. In art they traced around their hands and used pastel colours for shading and filling in the areas. Their artwork can be seen hanging on the wall in the hall. Reporters from the Grade 3/4 class, Laura Bowers and Jennifer Eedy said that all the reports and projects have been completed and handed in. They have been working on their choice of province in Canada and they also had to hand in a personal time line. It is very interesting to see the pictures of the students from birth to their current age. There have been a few changes in the school with the addition of a new kindergarten student. This student is the 29th student in kindergarten and according to current collective agreements entitles Walton school to an additional half-time teacher. Mrs. Scott who had been teaching the kindergartens as well as being a resource teacher is now teaching kindergarten full time. Principal, Alice McDowell will now take over as resource teacher and Tina Burkholder will be the new half-time teacher who will work with the Grade 2/3s in the mornings. He does not even ask us to accept him as personal saviour. He asks us to follow him, to be like him, to love and care for others the way he cares for us." The call to discipleship was Jesus' invitation to the disciples to continue to use their skill, gifts, and experiences, in order to enable and enhance the mission on which Jesus was embarked. "We don't have the earthly Jesus with us today as they did, but we do have the same Christ here with us. If we want to hear his call to follow, we must listen where he is to be found. That is here in the Church," said Rev. Murray. It is through the church's ministry of word and Sacrament that Christ is present today. The preaching and teaching of the Church and sacraments of baptism and communion make up the place where Jesus Christ is present. *PPAte* * at BRUSSELS MENNONITE FELLOWSHIP 9:30 a.m. Worship Service 10:45 a.m. Christian Education Pastor Ben Wiebe 887-6388 Guests Welcome Blyth United Church Come Worship The Lord With Us Sundays - 11:00 a.m. Worship Service & Sunday School Minister ~ Rev.
