Pre-Tykes trounce Lucknow
PeeWee Lightning
takes tourney gold
After a disappointing start to the
season for the Brussels Prc-Tykcs,
they have found their legs in the
last two games.
Taking on Kurtsvillc, Jan. 16, in
a season-opener rematch, the team
played well, coming away with a 4-
4 tie.
However, offensive talent blasted
onto the ice in Lucknow, Jan. 23, as
Brussels jumped into the lead and
never looked back.
Brussels dominated the play,
keeping the puck in their opponents
end for the majority of the 45
minute game.
Shots on net were minimal, but
Shea McLean made a nice slop
early in the game, passing ii to
Chris Becker to clear ii from the
zone.
The players stayed on the puck
throughout the contest, racing after
it in all comers.
Nick Goving opened the scoring
on a breakaway.
Gowing also netted the second
Brussels goal as he look ii in from
the blueline.
Anderson, Jr. C’s top defenseman
For the second consecutive
season, Wingham Ironman Brad
Anderson, of the Blyth area, was
selected as the Western Junior "C"
Hockey League's top defenceman
at the awards banquet on Saturday
night.
Anderson was also named to the
league's first all-star team's
defence. Troy Dosman was named
to the first team's forward unit.
Adam Millman of the Hanover
Barons was named the league's
most valuable player.
Brent McDermid of the Bulldogs
was selected as the most sports-
minded player.
The Kincardine goaltending duo
of Jason Reid and Joe Vercillo
were the top goaltenders.
Curtis Schmalz of the Walkerton
Blackhawks was named the rookie
of the year.
Millman and McDermid shared
the individual scoring award. The
two were in a dogfight for the
scoring title, but during the final
week of the regular season,
McDermid played two games,
while the two contests the Barons
were scheduled to play were
cancelled.
Brussels continued to pell the
Lucknow ncimindcr with shots as
most players had good attempts .
Ty Sebastian scored Brussels'
third as he batted in his own
rebound.
Ryan Baker had a great shot as
he stole the puck from a defender al
the blueline, but was thwarted by a
sprawling goalie.
The fourth came from Becker as
he slipped the puck out of a pack of
skaters and across the line.
Morgan Dcitncr earned an assist
on Gavin Bowers' first goal of
seven when she was tripped while
taking a shot. Bowers picked it up
for the goal.
As the game continued, the Brus
sels attackers did not let up as sev
eral players scored multiple times.
Bowers scored two and Dcitncr
one before a nice clearing pass
from Becker to Danny Donkers set
up at play for Baker to score.
During the next shift, Bowers tal
lied two more and Sebastian added
two of his own.
Receiving bursary awards were
David Bartman of the Ironmen,
Chris Phair of the Wiarton Wolves
and Boulton.
Les Small of the Patriots'
executive was honoured as the
volunteer of the year.
Ry>an Cherrey of the Mount
forest Patriots is the goaltender for

team up by two going into the
third.
Hemingway's second goal gave
Brussels a nice edge. The helper on
this one went to Tyler Campbell.
Things got a little scary when
Zurich answered less than a minute
later with two goals, just seven sec
onds apart. Brussels got some more
insurance when Armstrong, set up
by Campbell and Pal Rushton lit
the light for the final lime in this 4-
2 outing.
Donkers made a great poke check
to stop a breakaway by Lucknow
and McLean cleared the puck away
from the net.
The pass from McLean went to
Dcitncr who carried it the full
length of the ice for another goal.
Sebastian and Bowers traded
scoring opportunities with Sebas
tian putting in three and Bowers,
two.
Good work along the boards by
Conner Smith, Cowing and Becker
kept the play in open ice.
Dcitncr closed out the scoring in
the 21-0 rout.

Anderson, Tyler Kernighan and
Neil Salverda.
Goderich pulled to within one at
the 8:20 mark of the third then
evened the tally with just 44 sec
onds remaining.
Blyth eked out the win when

netter 10 seconds later.

The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee
Lightning was in Orangeville
participating in a tourney this past
weekend, Jan. 22-24.
In their first game against
Mississauga, Nicki McGlynn
deflected a pass by Brittany
Campbell into the top corner to
open the scoring late in the first
period.
Goals by Carleigh Weiler, Jessica
Mann and Brittany Kellington, with
assists going to Heather Walker,
Campbell and McGlynn rounded
out the scoring in the second
period. Mississauga answered with
one.
Extending the Lightning lead in
the third with two goals by Walker,
assisted by Weiler and Katie
Whytock, sealed Mississauga's fate
with a 6-1 win.
Brook Wheeler defended for the
Lightning in net.
Game two against Burlington
would prove to be somewhat
frustrating as the girls had two
goals called back and although
outplayed them, had to settle for a
2-1 loss. Walker scored for the
Lightning and' Nicki Berfelz
minded the net.
In the semi-finals Saugeen met
up with the Mississauga Chiefs.
Midway through the first, the
Lightning jumped into the lead
with goals coming 40 seconds
apart, the first by Weiler from
Bridget Sheddon, and the second
by Michelle Cook, assisted by
McGlynn and Campbell.
Whytock finished the scoring
with less than a minute remaining
Novice Reps come up short
Blyth Novice Reps came up short
when they hosted Clinton Jan. 20.
Allowing the visitors to net five
goals, the home team managed just
one. Anthony Peters notched the
lone Blyth marker off a play by
Kendall Whitfield.
A late effort by the Blyth Novice
Reps to pull out a win fell short
against Zurich, Jan.9.
The visitors look a three-goal
lead to the end of the second and,
though shut out for the rest of the
game, were victorious.
Blyth's lone goal came from
Brandon Kellington off a pass from

on passes from Cook and Campbell
to end the period on top by three.
The Chiefs responded with a goal
early in the second period but any
hopes of a comeback were short-
circuited by the Lightning when
Cook scored unassisted early in the
third.
Befelz was solid between the
pipes with the 4-1 win.
The final would have the girls
meet up with Burlington. A hot
goalie kept the Lightning silent for
the first period as the play was
mostly in the Burlington end.
Early in the second on a two-on-
one rush, using her linemate
Whytock as a decoy, Cook caught
the goalie with her stick off the ice
to slide one in.
Wheeler handled anything
Burling directed at her to end the
period up by one.
The Lightning had their chances
in the third with a cross bar and a
couple of posts but could not put
one in. With 30 seconds left in the
game and their goalie on the bench,
Burlington mounted a charge but
came up short as the Lightning shut
them out 1-0 to win the gold.
Mascot Jack was exuberant.
The defense teams of Bridget
Sheddon and Candice Robertson,
Jackie Zacher and Jessica Mann,
were a big factor in keeping shots
on net to a low number for the
tourney.
For the season so far the
Lightning have two silvers and a
gold in tournament action, are
currently third in league play and
have been upgraded to "A" status.
Krystopher Campbell.
Joel Salverda stood between the
posts for Blyth.
