PAGE 9. Blyth Bantams beat Brussels It was a blowout for the Blyth PeeWees as they began quarter final play against Belmore, Jan: 20. They hit the ice on fire, blasting eight shots past the goal in the first period. Solo efforts by Kirk Stewart and T.J. Marks put the squad ahead before Belmore got on the score­ board at 12:46. Over the next five minutes, Blyth popped in four to take a 6-1 lead. Scores went to K. Stewart (three) and Micah Loder. Andy Toll, Cole Stewart (three), Trever Koehler and Mike Bean earned assists. Belmore narrowed the gap by one at 4:25 only to watch Blyth slap in two more before the end of the frame. Goals were scored by K. Stewart assisted by C. Stewart and Loder off the stick of Steve Van Amers- foort. Blyth continued the onslaught in the second when Loder added his third at 14:05 with an assist from Bean. Loder passed the puck to Marks for the second of the period. Up 10-2, Blyth allowed two in the third while tallying five of their own. Netters went to C. Stewart (three), K. Slewart and Brett Bean, with the final C. Stewart goal com­ ing with just one second remaining. M. Bean (two), C. Stewart (two) and Loder assisted. Blyth took the first game 15-5. The team took time from regular play to compete in the 9th Annual PeeWee Hockey Tournament host­ ed by the Chesley Kinsmen Club, this past weekend. They started strong against Wiar- ton, topping them 7-2 in Saturday morning play. Wiarton struck first at 5:12 of the first only to sec Loder tic it up three minutes later. Loder put Blyth ahead in the sec­ ond on a solo effort before Wiar- ton's second nettcr evened the tally at two. From late in the second period, it was all Blyth as they racked up five more and kept their opponent off the board. C. Stewart's natural hatlrick was bookended by a Marks goal and Loder's third. Assists went to Bean (two), K. Stewart (three) and Loder (two). Loder was named the game MVP. Blyth met a tough Ripley squad Saturday afternoon. Though outscored 7-3, goalie Cody Anderson was named the game MVP. Ripley took the early lead and never relinquished, pulling three in the net before Blyth made any inroads. Relayed from C. Stewart and K. Stewart, Bean netted the puck at 5:34 of the second with Toll and Loder combining for the team's second of the period. - Blyth was down 6-2 before Marks took the puck from Ryan McClinchey at 3:37 of the third for their final goal. Ripley won 7-3. In quarter-final play Sunday, Blyth nipped the host Chesley squad in a tight 4-3 victory. C. Stewart started the action at 5:06 of the first when he slid one by the netmindcr, assisted by Bean. Chesley scored late in the first and second to take a 2-1 lead but with only seconds remaining in the middle frame, Blyth hit hard. In the final minute, Loder took Novices edge Goderich 3-2 Home ice was no advantage for Goderich when the Blyth Novice B Bulldogs came to town Jan. 22 and edged their hosts 3-2. Scoring first was Blyth's Katie McClinchey off a pass from Tony Bean in the opening period. In this tight contest, Blyth hung on to their one-goal edge until the third, then increased it with an unassisted shot from Bean. The Brussels loses 4-1 to Clinton Clinton came to town on Jan. 19 and handed the Brussels PeeWees a 4-1 defeat. It was a solid first period for the visitors that was the undoing of Brussels with Clinton scoring all their goals before the buzzer sound­ ed. Both teams were shutout in the second then Tyler Campbell bulged the twine in the third to put Brus- the puck from C. Stewart and Koehler for a goal. C. Stewart fol­ lowed with an unassisted goal and K. Stewart added to the totalwith under 10 seconds remaining. Loder and C. Stewart assisted. Down 4-2, Chesley managed only one more in the third to take the loss. C. Stewart was awarded MVP status. The team took a hard, double­ overtime loss in semi-final play after tying the match in the dying seconds of regulation lime. Blyth entered the third behind 3- 1 on the strength of a lone goal from C. Stewart. K. Stewart assist­ ed. Bean drew the team within one al the 6:51 mark before C. Stewart popped the game lying goal with just 36 seconds left. Toll earned the assist. After the squads blanked a five- minute Overtime period, they went into sudden death play. Chesley bulged the twine at 6:26. C. Stewart was named to the tournament all-star team and was awarded a hockey bag. All team members were given medallions. game turned into a real nail-biter when Goderich scored two quick ones just two minutes later to tie it. Blyth was stirred, not shaken by the challenge, however, as Bean came back to bulge the twine for the second time, within a few sec­ onds of the final Goderich goal. The assist went to Brittany Peters. The 'Dogs dug in and managed to hold the lead until the final buzzer. seis on the board. On Jan. 22 the PeeWees hosted Zurich and came up victorious. It was knotted at nothing going into the second period until Sean Hoegy, set up by Joel Hemingway finally drove one between the pipes to get it started. Hemingway came back to score one of his own, off a pass by Scott Armstrong to put the Continued on page 10 The Bantam Bulldogs racked up two wins and added a loss to finish their regular season, during the month of January. Hosting the Elma-Logan squad, Jan. 11 proved to be good luck as they battled to a 5-4 win. Goals were scored by Craig Marks (three), Derek Cook and Matt Anderson assisted by Nick Courtney, Cook and Anderson. Game two against Milverton, found the boys in hibernation for the first two periods. They came to life too late for the third period and suffered a 3-2 loss. Point getters for Blyth were Cook and Marks, both assisted by defenceman Jeff Carter. The final regular game was held in Brussels on Jan. 24. The Blyth crew scored eight goals to secure the win. Obtaining goals were Courtney, Anderson (three), Cook, Marks, Scott Austin and Jeremy Austin. The lone Brussels goal was scored by Darryl Houston assisted by Chris Blake. Keeping the goals respectable for Blyth are net minders Ryan Lee and Travis Campbell. Strong defense is provided by Shaun Henry, Jeff Carter, Devon Shannon and Paul Walker. Offensive play is supplied by Craig Marks, Derek Cook, Matt Andersen, Scott and Jeremy Austin, Matt Bromley, Justin Rinn, Nick Courtney, Martin Sturzenegger, Mike Bernard and Robbie Archambault. Coaching staff is Dave Cook, Rob Finch, Brent Scrimgeour and Doug Walker. With regular season finished, the Blyth Bulldogs await the winner of a Normanby against Clifford series to begin playoffs. Coaches and players invite fans to their WOAA playoffs which will begin in February. Home game time is Monday at 7 p.m.
