Reduce, reuse and recycle J The first regular meeting of the BMG Recreation board of 1999 was held Jan. 13 with the following board member appointments being made by their respective municipalities for the 1999 board term: Village of Brussels, Mary Stretton (council), Abi Corbett, George Langlois, Brian Deitner; Township of Grey, Alvin McLellan (council), Mervyn Bauer, Steve Knight, Gail Semple; Township of Morris, Edna McLellan (council), Mary Bernard, Paul Gowing. Nominations were called for the position of Chairman. Alvin McLellan was acclaimed as chairman. George Langlois was acclaimed as vice-chairman for the 1999 term of the board. Shelly Pryce will assume the position of secretary treasurer on a six-month probation period. The 1998 budget committee was appointed, including A. McLellan, Stretton E. McLellan, Langlois, along with Shelly Pryce and Arena Manager Murray McArter. The committee will meet at the Grey Twp. Municipal Office on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. Ideas for capital expenditures were discussed. These included getting some prices on new front doors for the arena and fixing the sidewalk at the front entrance of the arena. Salaries and remunerations for recreation staff were discussed. McArter received a total of $250 increase on his gross salary for the year. Clarence McCutcheon and Heather Blake will each receive an hourly increase. Pool wages were deferred until another meeting. There was discussion regarding a dressing room for the girls involved in minor hockey. It was pointed out that some girls are at an age where they can no longer change in the same room with the boys and there are more girls becoming involved with hockey all the time. McArter has since cleaned up an area in the storage room as a temporary solution to the problem. Approval was given for the Drive carefully purchase of some kitchen supplies that were budgeted for in 1998. They will be set up as an accounts payable. Fundraising for 1999 was discussed. The Valentine's Dance is to be held in partnership with the Brussels Optimist Club on Feb. 13. Other fundraising ideas that were mentioned were a Snowfest, and junk sale at the arena in the springtime. These ideas will be discussed at the next meeting. The date for the Christmas dance was set for Dec. 11 and the date for the family skate was set for Dec. 3. McArter was instructed to tentatively book Oct. 30 for the Halloween dance that will be held in joint with minor soccer. The entire board formed a committee with Langlois being the chairman for the 1999 New Year's A Note from Betty Well once again the weather is the major subject for discussion and it well deserves that honour. Again this week we saw Mother Nature at her best and worst as the winds blew and the sun shone. It made me think of the way our life goes, up and down, round and round, many times, with no rhyme or reason, just moving on - taking us along for the ride. And like the days in our life, the days of the storms, moved at a rhythm that was not controlled by humans. Some of the TV pictures showed the anger and frustration as people fully realized they could not do a thing. And so as humans we discuss the weather knowing full well there is not a blasted thing we are expected to do about it. THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Hugh, Don, council and the many helpers who have our village in the best shape of many around. Our snow was on tour before most, our sidewalks are cleaner than several and our streets are wider than many. Thanks for doing your job so well. If a hug would help in this cold weather let me know. I can give you names of appreciative folk. Brussels Public School is gearing up for the annual magazine sale. In the next couple of weeks one of the children may contact you. Be a good neighbour and renew your reading material and help them with school finances. Dr. Hanlon is sure being missed in the village. I wonder if the snow in Toronto was a pleasant reminder of his many winter trips to Brussels.
