Safe Snowmobiling
RIDE SAFE • RIDE SOBER
Every winter in Ontario an average of forty people are killed and hundreds injured
in snowmobiling mishaps. Most of these occurrences are preventable if snowmobilers
follow a few basic safety rules. Here are three key elements of snowmobile safety.
RIDE SAFE...
OBEY THE SPEED LIMIT ANO RIDE ACCORDING TO
CONDITIONS
~ Maximum speed on trails and roads is 50 km/h;
however, on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or
less, the maximum speed is 20 km/h.
- Excessive speed is involved in over half of all
snowmobile deaths. Always ride according to trail
and weather conditions.
STAY ON THE TRAILS AND AVOID ROADS. LAKES
AND RIVERS
- Ontario has 50,000 kilometres of snowmobile trails.
You can go far on the trail system!
~ Most snowmobile deaths occur on lakes and rivers
while most injuries occur on street and highways.
- If it is necessary to ride on ice, always check the ice
conditions first. If you don't know, don't go.

DON'T DRINK AND RIDE
~ Snowmobilers are subject to the same laws and
penalties as drivers of motor vehicles.
- If convicted of driving a snowmobile while impaired,
you will lose all driving privileges (car, truck,
motorcycle, off-road vehicle and snowmobile).
~ Over 70 per cent of Ontario snowmobile drivers
involved in fatal incidents had been drinking.
REMEMBER:
The Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol (STOP) program,
which empowers trained volunteers to enforce the
Motorized Snow Vehicles Act, is expanding to many
communities in Ontario. Look for these new
enforcement units in your community.
