Writer recounts events, people of 1998
By Mark Nonkes
The Millennium bug 2000 hit my
computer a year early. After this
report was nicely typed on the
computer, millennium bug must
have decided 2000 was too long a
wait. My report was deleted for no
reason, an early casualty.
So I had to rewrite it on paper,
the millennium bug can't affect the
good old pen and paper. People are
already hoarding food for the day
all computers might crash. People
are scared. Since the millennium
bug is only choosing a few, for
now, let's reflect on the year of
1998.
A year of global politics, a year
of weather conditions, sports, the
entertainment industry, the business
world, local politics. A lot
happened this past year. Here is a
list of '98 phrases or names that
have affected life and made an
impact on the world we live in.

Giving, gift of love, caring
By Becky Nethery
I once heard a story about a
young boy in North Africa who
was living in a hospital/orphanage.
His parents had been killed, right
before his eyes, in a terrorist attack.
Ever since then, he hadn't
communicated with anyone.
There was a lady who lived in the
mountains, deep in Tennessee. She
had collected over 1000 shoeboxes,
full of toys, for a Christian
Christmas organization involving
Franklyn Gram. Since this lady was
so outgoing and dedicated to
bringing a Merry Christmas to
children in Third World countries,
she was allowed to go on the trip to
deliver shoeboxes to the children.
As the team came to a hospital
one day, the lady was asked to give
a box to a young boy who had
seem his parents killed, and hadn't
talked to anyone for over two
years.
The nurse pointed to a small boy
who looked like he had
experienced enough hurt in his
young life to till a lifetime.
The lady approached the bed
with a very special shoebox. At
first when she talked to the boy he
avoided eye contact. But she did
not give up. She continued to talk
to him with loving words and
gentle tones. He looked at her, then
after the box, his eyes curious.
She gently put the box on his lap,
waiting for him to open it.
Slowly, he lifted the lid and was

filled with happiness at the sight of
all the toys. As he took out a car he
began to make "car sounds".
Handing another car to the lady, the
two drove cars all over the small
child's legs and bed. For about an
hour they continued to play. As she
started to say goodbye to her new
friend, suddenly he beat her to it.
"Thank you, ma'am".

Band records tunes
By Ashley Gropp
Local band Perish spent some
recording time in Kitchener in mid
December. The band, which
consists of guitarist/singer Joshua
Gropp of Brussels, drummer Rob
McKercher of Jamestown and
bassist/backup vocalist Tim
Mulvey of Belmore, has played
several shows since Mulvey joined
in September, including the Ark
Youth Drop-In, F.E. Madill
Secondary School, Stratford Fall
Fair and Swampwater Battle of the
Bands in Walkerton.
They recorded at Iron Lung
Studios in the home of Mike
Delisle, founder and guitarist of the
Kitchener punk band, Pablum.
In about 10 hours, Perish
recorded nine original songs, one
"cover" and a hidden track. They
also recorded three more songs at
Benedict Studios in Stratford in

"You are very, very, welcome
young man." She bent over and
planted a small kiss on his
forehead.
As she left the room many car
sounds were heard from the hall.
She turned around to see the small
boy laughing in delight with his
small toys.
"Merry Christmas," said the lady
as she left the room.
August, with Gropp playing bass.
They are currently working on
releasing those tracks, expecting
labels to be completed by the end
of this month.
Most of the tracks were recorded
"off the floor," meaning all three
members played all together. Each
of the 11 songs were done in one or
two takes. The kazoo and guitar
solos and background vocals were
recorded later. Their hidden track
was almost entirely improvised at
the studio, entering with only a
bass line.
An anticipated upcoming event
for the band is the second annual
concert Face Plant, which Perish
conceived. Last year, the profits
went to the Kids' Help Foundation
and the Ark. Four bands
participated in the concert held at
the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre.
