court costs

sions in Wingham and Exeter. For
most courts there is no additional
security costs because police offi
cers who are in the building to tes
tify in court cases provide the
security. Additional security is
required, however, for family court,
court cases related to the Children’s
Aid Society and general division
(formerly High Court). Most of
these courts are held in Goderich.
OPP, which have a contract to
provide policing service in
Goderich, estimate that there is an
additional $25,000 to $35,000 in
court security costs. This cost will
now be shared by al] municipalities
as will any additional cost in
Exeter. Wingham, which wants to
continue to have its own police
force, will shoulder any additional
cost for courts in that town.
Meanwhile the Wingham Police
Services and the town asked for
assurance that if other municipali
ties decide to amalgamate with
Wingham, the amalgamated areas
would not have to continue to
receive OPP policing. The county
voted to inform Wingham that
under the standard OPP contract
“one year written notice of termina
tion to the other party” is all that is
required for a municipality to with
draw from the contract.
In a third motion, council agreed
that it will have a five-member
Police Services Board if the con
tract is signed to have a county
wide OPP force.
