IPM, WI share cookbook
There's more to the International
Plowing Match than plowing. This
annual show, which comes to
Huron County in September of
1999, is a celebration of farm,
agricultural and rural life - and a
very important element of that is
old fashioned country cooking.
In keeping with its diverse theme
the IPM Souvenir Committee has
just published a cookbook - Food,
Fun and Frivolity.
This book features Huron
County's finest recipes and helpful
hints for good living and has been
compiled by all the branches of the
Huron County Women's Institute.
Preparing this book for the IPM
is in keeping with the Women's
Institute motto, "For Home and
Country."
As noted in the foreward to the
book, "Women's Institutes are well
known for their involvement in
community affairs, such as, doing
volunteer work for nursing homes
and schools, sponsoring 4-H clubs
and helping other organizations
wherever needed. Each branch
gathers local history for
Tweedsmuir books, as well as for
scrap books, some of which are
stored in local libraries. These
books have been most helpful in
writing of community histories and
school projects."
"We feel this book is part of our
Huron County history and hope it
will be a treasure in your home and
will be passed on from 'generation
to generation."
The book features more than 300
.recipes, household hints and
thoughts to ponder. The recipes
have been contributed by Women's
Institute members and volunteers
with the IPM and virtually cover
everything from soup to nuts.
Categories include beverages;
sauces and dips; pickles and
preserves; salads; soup; vegetable

dishes; meats; biscuits, buns and

are family favourites like Graeme's

Craig, chairman of the IPM '99.
Huron County Good Luck
Chocolate Chip Cookies, submitted
by "a Ploughman’s Mother", WI
member Dolores Shapton comes
with the additional instructions,
"Four or five chocolate chip
cookies will help Huron County
Ploughman to have good Luck each
day."
Recipes range from making
sausage by WI member Ruth Bauer
to Zurich Bean Festival Nachos
from IPM member Heather Klopp.
There are also words of wisdom,
prose, poetry and prayers. Many of
the readings hope special
significance to rural living and
farming. Others offer advice and
reflections of marriage and family
life. Another section offers bridal
shower ideas, including gifts and
games.
There are many recipes that offer
food for thought, such as those for
a good marriage, remaining young,
a happy day, preserving children
and a sweet disposition.
There are many helpful hints for
the home and instructions for a
crocheted afghan.
Food, Fun and Frivolity is more
than a cookbook, it is a book that
reflects the culinary diversity of
Huron County, honours the rural
traditions and celebrates the
upcoming International Plowing
Match to be held Sept. 21 - 25.
The book is being sold by the
IPM Souvenir Committee with
proceeds going to Souvenir
Committee and Women's Institute.
