Blyth skaters take dance tests It was a successful day for mem­ bers of the Blyth Figure Skating Club Dec. 18 when they took their tests. Passing the preliminary dance level, with the Dutch Waltz, were Stephanie Sanderson, Kaitlyn Toll, Angela Nonkes, Katie McClinchey and Corrine Falconer. Jenna Rinn and Lauren Snell passed the Canas­ ta Tango. Brussels and Blyth will play against each other on Friday night at 6:30. PAGE 11. Tyke goalie earns against Goderich On Saturday the Brussels Tykes hosted a strong Goderich team. Mid-way through the second period Ben Gowing made a solo rush, deked a defenseman and beat the goalie with a shot to the comer to give Brussels a 1-0 lead. Goderich put the pressure on, but goalie Ryan Smith, playing a solid game, made several good saves to keep the Goderich shooters off the scoreboard. In the third period Cody Subject outraced two Goderich defensemen for a loose puck and scored on a breakaway to up the Brussels lead. Smith continued his stellar work to earn his first shutout in this 2 - 0 PeeWees win big The Blyth PceWees ended 1998 with a big win over Elma-Logan, taking them 8-4. It was a seesaw battle through the first and second periods until Blyth kicked it into overdrive in the third. Micah Loder started the scoring, unassisted, at 11:39 before Elma- Logan answered at 4:45 of the first. Loder tallied his second of the game at 14:01 of the second with the assistance of Neil Salverda and Mike Bean. Elma-Logan tied the game at two, three minutes later, only to watch Blyth's Kirk Stewart pop one in on a power play within a minute. Tied at three, Andy Toll's goal at 1:19 sent the home team into the final frame with the lead. Stewart and Trever Koehler earned assists. Though Elma-Logan scored one, Blyth was unstoppable, adding four to the scoreboard. Loder added his third and fourth (shorthanded). Stewart and Koehler's netters also came while killing a penally. Assists went to Ryan McClinchey, Bean, Loder and Stewart. However, the Clinton squad nipped Blyth in the first contest of the year in a 5-4 late-game victory. Clinton struck first, at 13:36. Koehler responded at 5:56 to end the opening frame tied at one. Three goals by Clinton put them up 4-1 before Blyth got back in the game with two quick shots from Cole Slewart at 2:19 and 2:13. Slewart earned the natural hat- trick when he opened the third with a twine bulgcr to tic the match. He was assisted by K. Stewart and Loder. However, at 3:12, a Clinton shot slipped over the line to hand Blyth the loss. victory. During the Christmas break the Tykes played in the Zurich tournament. In their first game they met the host squad. Brussels jumped into a 3-0 lead. In the final period Zurich got back into the game with two goals, however, Brussels bounced back to score three of their own to cement a 6-2 victory. Scoring for the Tykes were Evan Ducharme with two, Subject with a pair and Taylor Prior and Gowing with singles. Robert Cronin earned two assists with singles going to Thomas Johnston, Ducharme and Gowing. With this victory Brussels advanced to the "A" side of the C. Stewart also earned an assist on Koehler goal. Hensall started quickly against the Tykes and scored three goals in the first 10 minutes. Prior, with an assist from Cronin, scored for Brussels during the Hensall flurry to make the score 3-1. Brussels picked up the pace for the last half of the game and created several good scoring chances. / However, the Hensall goalie made several great saves. With five minutes left in the game Gowing's goal with an assist going to Ducharme cut the Hensall lead to 3-2. Brussels continued to press but were unable to beat the Hensall goalie. The loss eliminated the Tykes from the tournament. The Tykes play their next game on Saturday, Jan. 16 against Seaforth. The team is also busy planning its annual tournament which will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14.
