Council repeals bylaw Thanks
Out with the old was the order of
the day at Brussels council regular
meeting, Jan. 4 when a 1931 bylaw
was repealed.
According to Clerk-Treasurer
Donna White a "new" business had
requested the installation of a pool
table, which according to the
bylaw, would mean payment of a
license fee and that children under
the age of 18 could not enter the
premises unless accompanied by an
adult. Also, the establishment could
not be kept open after 11 p.m.
White noted, however, that The
Ark, the hotel and the Legion all
have pool tables and have never
paid the licensing fee.
Council agreed that the bylaw
was outdated and should be
repealed.
New streetlights have been
installed al the industrial park and
by the ball park comer.***
The bag tag revenue is close to
$2,000 thus far, White reported,
with "few complaints".
It was discussed that seniors
should double up their garbage and
lake turns paying the lag cost each
week.
White also said that the recycling
has increased to the point where
pickup may have to be done week

Council said the village could
pick up the cost of a cell phone for
the Citizens on Patrol program.

A motion passed to inform the
county that Brussels would enter
into a county-wide OPP contract
based on 1999 estimates.

Two quotes .received for village
insurance showed a considerable
decrease from the previous year.
The quote of Sholdice Insurance
was $21,385 plus tax, down from
$35,000 last year. OME Jardine
quoted a price of $19,330, plus
taxes. Last year's quote was
$28,000.
The lowest tender was accepted
by council.♦**
A light is being installed behind
the Homecoming Park at the
request of Verne Bridge, who owns
the neighbouring business. Bridge
will pay the cost of the light, but
the village will cover the cost of
consumption.*♦*
The dog bylaw now includes a
provision for visious dogs. Anyone

A Note from Betty
Well, isn't this a winter wonderland! The white stuff is everywhere -
ripples and waves that sculpt neat forms in the yards. It's a beautiful sight!
Deb and Lucy and many others can tell you how that same beautiful stuff
leads your car to unwanted places - oh dear!
The snowmobilers were happy as they attended the races in Walton on
Sunday. Many were able to ride their machines over to the races.
Pollyanna was one of the old movies I caught this month and for those of
you who don't like snow and cold - follow her lead and think glad thoughts.
You know — be glad your house is warm, be glad your cat still likes you or
even be glad your mind lets you complain about the weather. The time is the
same and those around you will like you better if you're not dumpy and
down.
Bve now,
Betty.
