Cecil Wittich Blyth United Church What about faith? What is the nature of Christian faith? The Gospel states that faith is to be certain of things we cannot see (Hebrews ll: l). Such faith is possible. In our everyday life within the physical realm, we exercise faith in things we cannot see. Every time we turn on the television set, we see things which are all around us and which cannot be seen by the naked eye. The person about to take a parachute jump exhibits confidence in the unseeable pressure of the air which will inflate the parachute and permit a safe landing on the ground. No one has ever seen the atom, and yet we believe in its existence and nature. Christian faith goes beyond the physical world to the spiritual, which is present in the physical. God, who is the primary reality of the spiritual, has never been seen by anyone, and yet we believe in Him. We no longer see Jesus Christ since His life on earth, but we have confidence in the reality of His presence. The life everlasting and heaven are beyond our human vision, and yet our hope assures us of life beyond death. How do we know about the existence of such spiritual realities? We have the evidence of that which witnesses to the unseen. The Bible is a record of and a testimony to those realities which we cannot see. The church testifies by word, deed and life to the invisible realities of faith. The world of creation also provides evidence of a power and a wisdom beyond our own. What about that faith which is certain of things we cannot see? Christian faith centres in God through Jesus Christ. The invisible God became visible in Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ of God. Faith is freely offered to us by God as we approach Him through His Son on the cross in the light of the resurrection. Faith comes alive as we recognize it and apply it to our life. Let faith live, and become certain of those realities we cannot see. > bituaries BARBARA BETTLES Barbara Bettles died at her residence in Seaforth on Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 in her 44th year.
