Cole McLean of Brussels has a new piece of hardware for his trophy cabinet after the business owner claimed second place in Victim Services of Huron County’s recent Dancing with the Stars competition. Dancing with the Stars is Victim Services’ major fundraiser for the year and it was held on Oct. 19. McLean of McLean Brothers Concrete said he was happy about coming in second. “It’s better than third place,” he said with a laugh. “It went really well. I’m glad I placed. For a concrete guy, it’s nice to place.” McLean said that it was a long road to the event, saying he started practising months ahead of time. “[Professional dancer Reanna Ramaker and I] started practising in March,” he said. “It’s been pretty much two hours a week since then.” He said Ramaker is a great teacher and a great dancer and she did a great job teaching him. McLean said he was vacationing in Jamaica when he received the phone call asking if he wanted to participate. At the time, he said he would love to. Over time he discovered it wasn’t going to be easy to compete. “It was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be to dance,” he said. “I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.” After a few practice sessions, however, he said he started picking up the dancing. “It was nice to see everying come together,” he said. Ramaker and McLean performed two dances, a salsa to Prince’s “Kiss” and a paso doble, a fast- paced Spanish dance, to Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero”. “I’m so sick of both those songs now,” McLean said laughing, “I must have heard them a thousand times a piece.” McLean had no dancing experience before joining Ramaker aside from cutting an occasional rug at a buck and doe. He does plan to continue dancing, however, saying Ramaker will teach McLean and his fiancée to dance for their nuptials next year. When asked if he had any tips for next year’s crop of dancers, McLean said jump in with both feet. He admitted that everything wasn’t easy, saying he could barely button his shirt for his second dance because his hands were shaking with nervousness, but it was all worth it. “When you see it all come together and people are hooting and hollering, it’s all worth it,” he said.
