Greeting and ushering
worshippers at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, Oct. 27, were Nicole
Layton and Brenda Brooks. Marilyn
Scott was organist and Lori Falconer
ran the Power Point.
Kate Monk, guest speaker
welcomed everyone to church and
drew everyone’s attention to the
announcements printed in the
bulletin. Kate lit the Christ candle
and the other candles on the altar
table. She invited everyone to greet
one another on this rainy morning.
The first hymn, “Come In, Come In
and Sit Down”, was sung followed
by the call to worship repeated
responsively and the opening prayer
said in unison.
The children were asked to come
to the front for their story time. Kate
told the children that sometimes
when we start new things it can be
scary, like starting school for the
first time. Kate told the children that
her friend’s mother told them,
“When things get worse
have a cookie in your purse to
share.”
Kate shared cookies with the
children. Kate said a prayer for the
children. The children’s hymn,
“Jesus, Friend of Little Children”,
was sung. The scripture readings
were from Romans 8: 28, 31-39 and
Luke 2: 1-7. The choir sang the
anthem, “Abide With Me” with
Bodie Craig singing the second
verse as a solo.
Kate’s message to the
congregation was, “Be Open’. Kate
told the congregation of the trip she
and her husband had taken to the
Yukon and Alaska. They stayed in
cabins and took many hikes along
trails in the area. She told the
congregation that pictures can’t do
justice to the scenery in the Yukon.
You come close to nature and the
wild. She told of an eagle flying by
her. Everything is changing in the
Yukon because of the permafrost.
There were no spas or pools where
they were and supper was what you
could find at the nearest convenience
store because there were no
restaurants. In places
like the Yukon you will have
everything you need but not all that
you want.
The scriptures tell us of Jesus’
birth and a man growing up and not
having everything set up perfectly.
People need someone to walk the
path with them and Jesus is there.
Jesus taught and healed many on His
walks along the way. Things are not
always perfect. Be open to what is
happening around us, slow down
and enjoy your surroundings. Be
thankful for what we have and that
God is with us.
The offering was received
followed by the singing of the
response, “What Can I Do?”, the
offertory prayer, the prayers for the
people, silent prayers and the
singing of the Lord’s Prayer.
The last hymn, “Guide Me, O
Thou Great Jehovah”, was followed
by the commissioning and
benediction and the singing of the
response, “Wherever You May Go, I
Will Follow.”
Everyone was invited for coffee
and fellowship.

As I drove through the countryside
these last two weeks I enjoyed the
scenes that Mother Nature
presented: a field of fall crocus and
the colourful leaves on many bushes
along the way. Mother Nature at her
best. We do not have to leave Huron
County to see the best there is in
coloured leaves.
