Impromptu concert delights Walton Inn diners
Happy belated Thanksgiving to
everyone. I missed the deadline for
the column last week and it was no
one’s fault but my own, but that’s
just how it goes sometimes.
What a wonderful week of
weather prior to Thanksgiving and
many of the farmers certainly can
give thanks. Acres of soybeans and
white beans have been harvested and
acres of wheat have been planted.
On the Friday before Thanksgiving
weekend, a quick estimated count on
my 75-kilometre drive, had about
3,400 acres of beans off and about
2,300 acres still out there.
After a couple of days off, because
of a little rain, farmers were hard at
it again on Monday and Tuesday,
and of that 2,300 there remained
about 500 acres in the field on
Tuesday evening. In many fields
there were a couple of combines
working or one combine, but being
closely followed by the seed drill for
wheat. There has even been the odd
farmer giving the dry corn a try and
have started their dryers to dry it. No
report on moisture.
Long hours for many, but a rest for
all with the rain coming on Tuesday
evening. It was the weekend before
many even tried being in the field
again for beans or corn harvest. That
is the life of the cash crop farmer.
The livestock farmers are busy
harvesting corn silage and high
moisture corn for the animals. Some
are also baling soybean straw for
bedding for their animals. Fall is a
busy time and everyone hopes for
good weather, good yield and good
prices for their crops and their years
work.
The village of Winthrop has a new
resident. A white squirrel has taken
up residence on the well-treed three
corners of Winthrop. We all know
that Exeter is the home of the white
squirrels but one has ventured a little
farther north. Watch for the little
fellow and keep him safe in his new
home.
We send our get-well wishes to
Ruth Axtmann who is a patient in
hospital. She is coming along well
and will soon be home. Our healing
wishes go to Jerry Zwep who has
had surgery and is home and doing
well.
The Walton Women’s Institute
held its monthly meeting at the home
of Marjory Humphries. The five
ladies in attendance enjoyed visiting
with Marjory first, then a look
through the past at the store and then
the business portion of the meeting
and light lunch. They discussed the
upcoming meal at the hall.
Saturday morning at the Walton
Inn was a buzz with an impromptu
jam session. Jason Lamont and a
visiting guest, Gord, played guitars
and sang for over an hour to
entertain the customers. The crowd
joined in singing many of the
familiar songs and Graeme Craig
sang the “Auctioneer Song”. Our
Saturday waitress, Leigha, reports
she will be excited every Saturday to
come to work, if there is
entertainment. A great way to start
the day with music!
Rick and Margaret McInroy and
friends Pat Hunking and Lil
Appleby, spent a day touring Huron
County this past week. They report
enjoying the beautiful colours of
fall. It is amazing the many different
colours of yellows, orange and red
leaves to be seen and enjoyed. A
lovely day with food, friends and the
beauty of nature.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Kara Godkin, Joyce
Hartmen, Jared Kelso, Cheryl Ryan,
