Quipp earns hat-trick as Flyers best Hawks 9-6
The Goderich Flyers edged out the
Mitchell Hawks 9-6 on home ice last
week.
Goderich started out strong,
notching both an even-strength goal
and a power-play goal in the first.
Jack Stecho (Goderich) struck first
for the Flyers, assisted by Kaden
Hoggarth (Goderich).
Mitch Fisher (Goderich) netted
the power-play marker, assisted by
Kyle Langlois (Goderich) and Trent
Michie of Belgrave.
The Hawks, however, wouldn’t
take those goals lying down, earning
one goal before the end of the first
and then another four unanswered
goals in the second period.
Colton Quipp (Monkton) of The
Flyers put an end to the assault with
a goal, assisted by Chad Treble
(Goderich).
Parker Gibbings (Auburn) earned
Goderich’s next marker, assisted by
Michie and Jeff Fritzley (Seaforth).
Before the end of the third, Griffin
MacDonald (Clinton) marked
another goal for the Flyers, assisted
by Langlois and Cody Treble
(Goderich).
Entering the third, Quipp scored
another goal, assisted by Hoggarth,
before Mitchell would score their
last goal of the game, and tying the
score at six.
Quipp earned his hat-trick, putting
the Flyers ahead, assisted by
MacDonald.
Fritzley increased the Flyers’ lead
by one, assisted by Hoggarth and
Fisher.
Finally, Hoggarth netted an
unassisted empty-net marker.
While the Flyers were putting
plenty of ink on the game sheet, not
much of it was used for penalties
with the Flyers serving 11 minutes
on five infractions. The Hawks
served 27 minutes on nine
infractions.
Goaltending for the Flyers was
split between starter Spencer
Lazarevich, who played over 35
minutes, saving 16 of 21 shots, and
Jarod Fleming, who got the win,
stopping 16 of 17 shots.
Goderich has a busy weekend on
tap with a road game against
Kincardine on Oct. 25, then hosting
Mount Forest on Oct. 26 and finally
hosting Mitchell on Oct. 27.
Falling behind
Home ice wasn’t enough for the Blyth Brussels PeeWee Rep Crusaders as the squad was
felled by the Seaforth Stars 4-1 in Brussels on Saturday. The Crusaders will next face off
against the Huron-Bruce Blizzard on Oct. 26 in Brussels. (Sandy Bergsma photo)
Ironmen best Hawks, Barons
The Wingham Ironmen edged out
two opponents over the weekend,
besting Walkerton in overtime and
Hanover in regular time.
On Oct. 20, the Ironmen required
a single overtime period to beat the
Walkerton Hawks 5-4.
The two teams traded
goals throughout the first three
periods.
Walkerton struck first in the
opening period, but Wingham’s
Kyle Stanbury (Goderich)
responded, assisted by Chase Meurs
(Kincardine).
In the second period, Rhys
Vollmer (Kincardine) put Wingham
ahead, but by the end of the period,
Kincardine had evened the score
once again.
Stanbury opened scoring in the
third with his second of the game,
assisted by Carter Collinson
(Listowel).
Walkerton jumped ahead with
back-to-back goals before Stanbury,
unassisted, tied the game and earned
himself a hat-trick with less than 15
seconds left in the game.
Less than 30 seconds into
overtime, Collinson sealed
Walkerton’s fate, scoring
Wingham’s winning marker with an
assist from Meurs.
Walkerton earned four minutes
and a game misconduct on three
penalties while Wingham was
assessed four minutes on two
infractions.
Goaltender Zack Harrow secured
the win for Wingham, stopping 20
of 24 shots.
On Friday, Oct. 18, the Ironmen
edged out the Hanover Barons 4-3.
Hanover earned the only marker
in the first period with a power-play
goal.
Wingham responded in the second
with Hayden Robinson of Belgrave
putting the Ironmen on the board,
assisted by Collinson and Vollmer.
Vollmer then netted a power-play
marker assisted by Collinson and
Liam Melady (Seaforth).
Hanover responded with a power-
play goal before Wingham’s Corey
Restoule (Kitchener) put the
Ironmen ahead by one at the end of
the second.
In the third, Wingham’s Logan
Tolton (South Bruce) scored the
Ironmen an insurance goal, assisted
by Melady and Collinson.
The insurance goal was needed as
Hanover netted the last goal of the
game with less than 10 seconds left
in the third.
The match was a rough one for
scorekeepers as Wingham was
assessed 42 penalty minutes on 18
infractions. Hanover saw 39 minutes
on 16 infractions.
Harrow earned the win for
the Ironmen, stopping 23 of 25
saves.
Garrett Golley also spent time
between the pipes for the Ironmen,
stopping four of five shots.
The Ironmen travel to Mitchell on
Oct. 25 and are on the road again on
Oct. 26, taking on Walkerton.

to turn teams away past that
number,” Shawn said. “The
Wingham facility is better set up for
a bigger event, which is letting it
grow.”
The Belgrave couple is making a
conscious effort to bring events
close to home and represent and
support the Wingham Curling Club.
The Part II Bistro Ladies Classic
will be held at the Wingham Golf
and Curling Club from Nov. 29 to
Dec. 1, welcoming not only top-tier
curlers to the centre but also anyone
looking for a good dinner and to take
in some of that curling.
“It’s kind of an elite-level
women’s curling event,” Shawn
said. “We have, at this point, 21
teams confirmed. One team is from
the United States, two or three are
from Quebec and the rest are from
across Ontario.”
The event brings some significant
talent out, Shawn said, and brings
high-calibre competition to the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club.
“We’re really excited because
Wingham is the perfect facility to
host an event of a bigger scale like
this,” Shawn said. “The members are
super receptive to it and look
forward to it being hosted at the
club.”
Katie started the competition five
years ago when she was playing in
more women’s events. More
recently, she and Shawn have
focused on their doubles curling,
leading to them represent the
province earlier this year at the
national competition.
While the event runs all day
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the
dinner being prepared by Part II
Chef Peter Gusso is set for Saturday
night from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
While Gusso and his restaurant
have been the food sponsor for
years, this year the Cottrills decided
to rename the competition after the
Part II Bistro.
The event will feature live music
on Nov. 30, as well as lunch
available for purchase each day.
A Calcutta-style fundraising silent
auction will also be held, allowing
for teams to be “bought” for the
tournament.
The “owner” of the winning team
will take 60 per cent of the pot with
20 per cent going to the “owner” of
the runner-up squad. The remaining
20 per cent will go to the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club.
The auction is open from Nov. 1 to
Nov. 29 at the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club.
Tickets for the dinner are available
at the Wingham club or by
e-mailing Shawn at
shawn_cottrill@tnt21.com.
