Lobb carries Huron-Bruce after clean campaign
Continued from page 1
Prime Minister not winning the
popular vote. Conservative leader
Andrew Scheer swept much of
western Canada, completely shutting
Trudeau out of Alberta and
Saskatchewan and of much of
Manitoba.
Liberal Allan Thompson earned 33
per cent of the vote with 19,909
votes. Those numbers represent a
swing of about 4,000 voters between
the two men; Thompson losing from
his 23,126 votes in 2015 and Lobb
gaining from his 25,803.
Tony McQuail of the NDP
garnered 7,301 votes, 12.1 per cent
of Huron-Bruce voters, followed by
Nicholas Wendler of the Green Party
with 4.4 per cent, 2,670 votes, and
Kevin Klerks of the People’s Party
of Canada with 1.8 per cent of the
vote, 1,099 votes. Klerks’ party
failed to win a single seat, with even
leader Maxime Bernier taking a back
seat in his home riding.
In an interview with The Citizen
on election night at the Goderich
Sunset Golf Club just north of
Goderich, Lobb said he was very
happy with the results and said he
worked very hard to get to where he
was that night. He said he really
appreciates the ongoing support he
receives from the voters of Huron
and Bruce Counties.
He said that while there was a
tremendous amount of mud-slinging
at the leadership level on many
fronts, he was proud to have run a
positive campaign in his riding. He
added that seeing the antics at the
national level just shows that it
doesn’t work and voters aren’t
supportive of it.
Locally, he said he was happy that
he and other Huron-Bruce
candidates were able to keep it clean
and would support the signing of a
pledge ahead of the next election
asking the party leaders to do the
same.
In an interview with reporters
Monday night, Lobb said projections
showed the distinct possibility of a
minority government, it was just
unsure who would lead that
government. Locally, however, he
focused on connecting with voters at
their doors.
“We went out door-knocking
every day. We probably walked 600
kilometres and knocked on over
13,000 doors,” Lobb said to his
dozens of supporters on Monday
night. “I tell you, the results that we
had from knocking on 13,000 doors
is almost identical to the results that
we had in the actual election, so
when they say people will tell you
the truth at the door, they do tell you
the truth at the door.”
He added that his re-election was a
“great win” for Huron-Bruce,
thanking his many supporters, voters
and members of his team for their
hard work and dedication.
Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa
Thompson, who won the riding in a
landslide last fall, was in attendance
and congratulated Lobb on the
support and respect he garners not
only in the riding, but in Ottawa.
She said she was proud to stand
with Lobb and that it was a great
night to be a Conservative in Huron-
Bruce. She added that hopefully
Lobb would “send the Liberals to the
curb” in the next federal election.
As for Lobb’s first order of
business, he said he and his team
would work hard to take down his
election signs and clean up the
campaign office before he would
return to work representing the
people of Huron-Bruce in Ottawa.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain!
(William S. Plumer, “The Ten Commandments”)
A great design of true religion is to bring men to habitual reverence for God’s divine
majesty. The very moment men cease to treat God as holy—that moment their hearts
and lives become polluted.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not
hold him guiltless, who takes His name in vain.” Exodus 20:7
Anything relating to the true God—His being, His nature, His will, His works, His
worship, His service, or His doctrine—pertains to God’s name. This commandment
extends to the state of men’s thoughts and hearts—as well as to their speech.
To take God’s name in vain, is to use it in any frivolous, false, inconsiderate, irreverent,
or otherwise wicked manner. The scope of this commandment is to secure the holy and
reverent use of all that by which God makes Himself known to His people; and so to
guard His sacred name against all that is calculated to make it contemptible.
The manner of taking His name is to be grave, solemn, intelligent, thoughtful, sincere,
and with godly fear.
“Our Father in Heaven, may Your name be honoured as holy.” Matthew 6:9

Fourth time’s a charm
Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb has now been elected to his position for a fourth consecutive term
after winning a decisive victory Monday night in the federal election. Lobb celebrated the
victory with his friends, family members and supporters on Monday night at Goderich Sunset
Golf Club just north of Goderich. On hand was Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson, who offered
congratulations to Lobb and his family. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
