‘Christmas Carol’ to feature veteran Festival artists
Late next month, the Blyth
Festival will put a Christmas show
on the Memorial Hall stage for the
first time in years, bringing in some
of Ontario’s most accomplished
performed to help tell the tale.
A Huron County Christmas Carol,
penned by Festival Artistic Director
Gil Garratt with songs written by
Holmesville’s John Powers, will be
on stage from Nov. 28 to Dec. 22,
with opening night slated for Friday,
Nov. 29. While the Festival had
attempted to produce a community
Christmas show several years ago,
this will be a professional
show featuring actors who should be
familiar to many Festival-goers.
Garratt will direct the production,
which will tell the tale of E. Scrooge
in the wake of the death of his
business partner J. Marley. Together
they were local titans of industry
who ran a feed and fuel empire, but
after Marley’s death, Scrooge’s
ruthless and uncharitable nature
takes over and he needs a bit of a
wake-up call.
A Huron County version of
Charles Dickens’ classic A
Christmas Carol, Scrooge will soon
be visited by three spirits over the
course of the night in an attempt to
rid him of his greed and instill the
holiday spirit in him.
Randy Hughson, one of Ontario’s
most celebrated stage actors, will
return to the Blyth Festival to play
Scrooge. Hughson appeared in
several seasons of the Blyth Festival,
playing Stompin’ Tom Connors in
The Ballad of Stompin’ Tom and
alongside Anne Anglin in the
Garratt-directed World Without
Shadows.
Hughson would go on to act with
the Stratford Festival after his brief
Blyth run and he is still a member of
the Stratford company today.
Also headlining the cast is
Stratford’s Marek Norman, who will
play the Ghost of Christmas Past,
among other roles throughout the
production.

Returning to the stage
Marek Norman, left, is shown during the Blyth Festival’s production of the two-man show Billy
Bishop Goes to War in 2014. Norman will be returning to the Blyth Festival stage, bringing his
musical and acting talents, as part of A Huron County Christmas Carol this holiday season.
Norman is shown with Blyth Festival fan-favourite J.D. Nicholsen. (File photo)
