Brussels Community Bible
Chapel
This Sunday, Oct. 20 at 10:30
a.m., Creation Ministries
International (CMI) will be hosted
by Brussels Community Bible
Chapel (BCBC) in the gym of the
former Brussels Public School on
Alexander Street. Everyone is
welcome. CMI representative Jim
Hughes will explain scientific
evidences in favour of intelligent
design and the weakness of the
scientific evidence for evolution. He
will also address the bigger
questions that arise if there is indeed
evidence of a Creator God.
Many people attempt to separate
science and faith by choosing one or
the other. They believe that science
and faith are contradictory and
actually opposed to each other. But
what should be the priority?
Shouldn’t it be to find truth in all
areas of life, whether it be in
spiritual matters or in the discovery
of the world and universe around us?
Truth cannot contradict itself. True
science and true faith must
complement each other.
Evolutionist and atheist Richard
Dawkins has said that science itself
is atheistic, which simply
demonstrates that his science is
based on an assumption that there is
no God. True science is objective
and should take into account all
possibilities. Believers of any faith
(including atheism) should be
willing to examine the relationship
between their faith and true science.
According to Romans 1:18-20,
God has made himself so obvious in
his creation that mankind has no
excuse not to believe in his
existence. This applies to any person
living in any part of the world at any
time in the past, present or future.
Psalm 19 tells us that the heavens are
proclaiming God’s glory day after
day and night after night with a
voice that can be heard and
understood in any language.
Sir Isaac Newton once
demonstrated the truth of Psalm 19
with a model he built of the solar
system. The planets were all made to
scale and placed in their correct
positions relative to each other and
the sun. A handle was attached to the
model, and as the handle was turned,
the planets orbited the sun in perfect
coherence, all remaining in their
orbits.
A professing atheist saw the model
in action. Clearly impressed, he
asked, “Who made this?” “Nobody,”
Newton replied calmly, explaining
that it had somehow assembled itself
on his desk in his absence.
After repeating the question a few
more times, Newton’s friend finally
understood what Newton was trying
to tell him. How could something so
perfectly balanced just create itself?
It would be no mean feat to build
an accurate model of the solar
system. Each planet has its own
unique day length depending on its
axial rotation, and its own year
length according to its elliptical orbit
around the sun. But building a
model of this system is only a
fraction of the complexity of the real
thing.
Even more amazing than an
organized solar system or galaxy is
the privileged status of our planet
Earth. All the conditions have been
met that make Earth hospitable to
life. And what amazing variety of
life forms we have; life in the water,
on land, underground, in the air. The
processes that enable these life
forms to live and eat and reproduce
are complex. Even the complexity of
a single-celled organism that is
invisible to the naked eye is
staggering. And then imagine the
trillions of cells in your own body,
each fulfilling a defined role in
perfect harmony with the rest of you
in order to keep you ticking!
“I praise you because I am
fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know
that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)
Richard Dawkins provides a
definition for biology (the study of
life) in his book called The Blind
Watchmaker. He wrote, “Biology is
the study of complicated things that
give the appearance of having been
designed for a purpose”. Even as a
Christian, I couldn’t say it any better
myself. Sometimes things actually
are exactly what they appear to be –
designed by the Creator.
