On Nov. 2, the Centenaires will be welcoming perennial rivals the Clinton Radars in a game organizers are calling, and hashtagging the #battleofhighway8, according to Centenaires Marketing and Promotions Director Brett Lee. Lee said that in the past the Radars have proven a stumbling block for the Centenaires, but this year he hopes things will be different. The Centenaires have signed Holdyn Lansink, who debuts for the squad this year. Lansink was the 2018-2019 Ontario Junior ‘B’ player of the year, playing for the Listowel Cyclones and posting 111 points in last year’s regular season and another 36 in the playoffs. Also new to the squad is former Radar Davis Brown who played for the Sarnia Sting, Seaforth’s Craig Dalrymple who played for Ohio State University, Nick Jung of Walton who played for the Stratford Warriors and Hayden Broomhead of Ingersall who played Division 2 hockey in Sweden, as well as for the Stratford Warriors. Lee said that Clinton has made some important off-season moves as well, which will make them a formidable opponent. The Radars have signed University of Western Ontario and Oshawa Generals player Ray Huether, originally of Londesborough, and Jamie Huber of Wingham to the squad. These two join an impressive roster including former OHL players like the Owen Sound Attack’s Steve Shipley who signed to Clinton this year. Lee said the game should be an exciting one and encourages fans to come out and cheer on the Centenaires. The squad started their season on the weekend visiting the Ripley Wolves. While the Centenaires started strong, taking an early two- goal lead, the Wolves eventually came out on top, posting a 7-3 win. The squad next plays on Friday, Oct. 18, visiting the Petrolia Squires. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. The Goderich Flyers posted their first win of the season on Friday, earning a convincing 5-1 victory over the Walkerton Hawks. After the big win, however, the squad was edged out by the Hanover Barons 5-4 in Goderich on Saturday night. Goderich started strong, earning two power-play goals in the first. Trent Michie of Belgrave netted the first, assisted by Matt Bean (Goderich) and Kyle Langlois (Goderich). Kaden Hoggarth (Goderich) earned the second power-play marker, assisted by Langlois and Avery Timmermans (Zurich). Hanover then scored two goals, one as the first period ended and another as the second began before Hoggarth would earn his second of the game; another power-play marker assisted by Jack Stecho (Goderich) and Langlois. Hanover earned another marker before the period let out. The third period mirrored the second with Hanover book-ending Goderich’s one marker with two of the Barons’ own. Michie earned Goderich’s only goal for Goderich in the third assisted by Langlois and Jeff Fritzley (Seaforth). Spencer Lazarevich played 57:14 of the 60-minute game for Goderich between the pipes, stopping 36 of 41 shots. Jarod Fleming played for just over a minute, but didn’t face any shots. On Oct. 11, Goderich bested Walkerton 5-1 on the road. Goderich dominated the first with two goals. Hoggarth scored his first of the season, assisted by Timmermans. Bean struck next with his own first goal of the season, unassisted. Eric Vander Eyk (Listowel) opened the second with an unassisted marker for Goderich before the Hawks earned their only marker of the game. Vander Eyk struck again, in the second, assisted by Stecho, followed by Timmermans, who found the back of the net with an assist from Bean. Goderich faced eight penalties over the course of the night totalling 24 minutes. Walkerton served three infractions totalling 14 minutes. Lazarevich got the win for the Ironmen, stopping 27 of 28 shots. Goderich will host the Mitchell Hawks on Oct. 20. Puck drop is set for 2:30 p.m. Flyers earn first win By Denny Scott The Citizen The Wingham Ironmen marked a busy week with two losses and one win. On Saturday, Oct. 12, the Ironmen visited Mount Forest and were edged out by the Patriots 5-4. Scoring didn’t start until the second period, when Mount Forest struck first well past the halfway point. Chris Adlys (Point Clarke) responded with a marker for Wingham assisted by Corey Restoule (Kitchener). Mount Forest took a 2-1 lead, but Wingham would leave the second period ahead thanks to goals by Kyle Stanbury (Goderich), assisted by Carter Collinson (Listowel), and by Logan Tolton (South Bruce), assisted by Chase Meurs (Kincardine). Mount Forest scored three unanswered goals in the third before Wingham’s Tolton responded, assisted by Meurs and Rhys Vollmer (Kincardine). Garrett Golley played the entire game between the pipes for the Ironmen, saving 44 of 49 shots. Wingham served four penalties totalling 16 minutes while Mount Forest served three, totalling six minutes. The Ironmen posted a 4-2 win over the Kincardine Bulldogs on Friday, Oct. 11 in Wingham. Kincardine opened scoring in the game with a power-play goal early in the first, however the Ironmen would leave the period ahead, earning three unanswered goals. Dawson Fahrer (Hanover) earned the first, assisted by Tolton. Corey Restoule notched a power- play goal, assisted by Meurs and Collinson, and Vollmer scored an unassisted goal with less than 20 seconds to go in the period. Kincardine regained some ground with a goal in the second period before Stanbury buried an empty- net, unassisted goal with less than two minutes remaining in the third, solidifying the Ironmen’s win. Kincardine served six penalties totalling 12 minutes while the Ironmen were assessed 30 minutes over seven infractions. Golley earned the win for the Ironmen, stopping 23 of 25 shots On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the Ironmen fell just short to the Mitchell Hawks in a 3-2 contest. Mitchell opened scoring in the first, however the Ironmen were able to tie it up before the period ended thanks to a power-play marker by Stanbury, assisted by Meurs and Collinson. Mitchell again jumped ahead in the second period until Austin McKeachnie (Teeswater) earned a power-play goal for Wingham assisted by Meurs and Vollmer. Mitchell would have the last word, however, with the winning goal being scored late in the third period. Golley played the entire match for Wingham, stopping 22 of 25 shots. The Ironmen were assessed two penalties totalling four minutes while the Hawks had trouble avoiding the penalty box, serving nine infractions totalling 26 minutes.
