Happy 50th Anniversary Ralph & Nancy Campbell October 11 Love your family Hospice fundraiser set The Irish Cowboys will be at Trinity Anglican Church in Blyth on Friday, Oct. 18 for a 7:30 p.m. concert in support of the Huron Hospice. The Goderich group is well known in the area for its eclectic mix of music from 1960s folk to Celtic and country. After a very successful performance in the spring by jazz musician Tim Elliott which also supported the Hospice, the folks at Trinity wanted to again host an event but perhaps offer music for a different audience. The intermission will differ as well. The popular wine and cheese of May is being replaced by beer and homemade pretzels, with some non-alcoholic beverages available as well. While the focus of the evening is the music of the Irish Cowboys, a speaker from the Hospice will also give a short presentation on the vital role of the hospice in our community. Admission and refreshments are free, leaving individuals to make a free-will offering as a donation to the hospice. Representatives from the hospice will be on hand to process tax creditable donations as requested. For more information please contact mcgregor@ezlink.ca or 519- 525-8119. Please note that Trinity is a totally accessible facility. Honouring a legend Maitland River Elementary School participated in the Terry Fox run last Friday. (Denny Scott photo) Environment Minister Yurek visits MVCA The Chair and Vice-Chairs of Maitland Conservation recently met with two provincial Ministers to discuss local conservation challenges. On Sept. 18, Dave Turton, Chair, Roger Watt, Vice-Chair, and Matt Duncan, Second Vice-Chair, met with Jeff Yurek, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks and Lisa Thompson, Minister of Government and Consumer Services at Maitland Conservation’s Administration Centre. Thompson is the MPP for Huron-Bruce and Yurek is the MPP for Elgin- Middlesex-London. At the meeting, the Ministers were briefed on key conservation issues in Maitland Conservation’s area of jurisdiction and how the organization is dealing with these challenges. The importance of helping municipalities to reduce the potential for property damage, loss of life and community disruption in areas that are at risk of flooding and/or erosion was also highlighted. Within the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds there is an estimated $176 million of assessment located in areas at risk from flooding. Along the shoreline there is over $366 million worth of land and development in areas prone to bluff erosion, with an additional 530 acres of land at risk from gully erosion. The impacts the changing climate is having on local watersheds and the types of programs needed to help municipalities and landowners put mitigating conservation measures in place were outlined to the Ministers. Some of the key actions recommended by Maitland Conservation include restoration of floodplain and river valleys, buffer strips along watercourses and the use of cover crops to help keep soil and nutrients on the land and out of watercourses. Maitland Conservation representa- tives emphasized that stewardship services such as extension support for landowners and municipalities to plant living snow fences and windbreaks, buffer watercourses, develop rural stormwater management systems and undertake water quality improvement projects, are vital to protecting soil and water resources. The importance of maintaining the Healthy Lake Huron (HLH) partnership with conservation authori- ties, health units and counties along Lake Huron was also highlighted. This partnership is co-led by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The objectives of HLH are to work with landowners and municipalities to improve water quality in Lake Huron, help landowners improve soil health and to develop rural stormwater management systems. At the meeting, Yurek advised participants that he is committed to consulting with municipalities and conservation authorities across the province to clearly identify the core services on which conservation authorities should focus. David Turton, Maitland Conservation Chair, commenting on the meeting said, “We appreciated the opportunity to outline local stewardship needs and we’re looking forward to participating in the upcoming consultation process.” The Ministry of the Environment, Parks and Conservation’s consultation with Conservation Authorities and municipalities is expected to be held later this fall.
