THE EDITOR, As the planet speeds from a global emergency to a global catastrophe, radical, clear and targeted policies on carbon pricing are mandatory. In Huron-Bruce, we are faced with the choice of five candidates, two candidates on the right and three candidates on the left. Expert analysis of all the parties’ platforms show that none, with the possible exception of the Green Party, are destined to meet Canada’s targets as agreed to by Canada by signing the Paris Accord. On the right side of the political spectrum, one party denies action is necessary; the other party’s policies have been assessed as being vague, lacking in targets and highly unlikely to be effective. On the left side of the political spectrum, all three parties have more clearly defined plans and targeted policies. In Canada, over 800,000 students and their supporters went on strike on Friday, Sept. 27, demanding that our political leaders acknowledge the climate emergency and take immediate effective steps to prevent the present climate emergency progressing to a climate catastrophe. On Oct. 21, voters should respond to the angst and lack of hope that was expressed by the millions of children in Canada and throughout the world going on strike. Parents, grandparents and all concerned citizens should choose the party most likely to prevent this environmental catastrophe. Time is not on our side. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has clearly stated, based on extensive science-based evidence, that we have only 11 years left to make major changes before the relentless, irreversible, tipping point of climate stability is reached. On Oct. 21, let us vote in favour of the future wellbeing of our children and our grandchildren, for they are depending on us. Jim Hollingworth MD, Goderich.
