Sports Ironmen ground Goderich Flyers with a 6-1 win After extending their season- opening winning streak to seven games with a victory over the Goderich Flyers, the Wingham Ironmen tied the Mount Forest Patriots over the weekend, ending the streak. On Friday night the Flyers visited Wingham, where the Ironmen came out ahead in a 6-1 win. The first period ended evenly, with Goderich and Wingham both marking goals in the first period. Wingham’s Ryan Litt (Palmerston) opened the game with an unassisted goal. Nolan Gagnier (Brucefield) evened things up, earning a goal for Goderich assisted by Eric Vander Eyk (Listowel) and Kyle Langlois (Goderich). After the first period, however, the Ironmen quickly scored insurance goals, earning two more goals in the second. Logan Tolton (South Bruce) scored just over a minute and a half into the first, assisted by Liam Melady (Seaforth) and Coleson Fischer (Mildmay). Later in the period, Tyson Koopman (Palmerston) earned a power-play goal assisted by Corey Restoule (Kitchener) and Tolton. In the third, Tolton earned a second goal, this time on the power- play, assisted by Restoule and Koopman. Tanner Reid (Kincardine) earned the last two goals for the Ironmen. The first was assisted by Dana Smith (Atwood) and the second was a shorthanded, unassisted goal. Goderich spent significantly more time in the penalty box than Wingham with the Flyers being penalized for 14 minutes over seven infractions. The Ironmen served six minutes on three infractions. Goaltender Garrett Golley earned the win for the Ironmen, stopping 27 of 28 shots. Spencer Lazarevich played all 60 minutes for Goderich, stopping 33 of 39 shots. The Flyers also faced a tough opponent in the Kincardine Bulldogs on Sunday, losing 5-0 on home ice. Goderich served eight minutes of penalties on four infractions while Kincardine served one penalty worth two minutes. Lazarevich played the majority of the game for the Flyers, stopping 39 of 43 shots, while Jarod Fleming finished the game as goaltender, letting one goal in on one shot. On Saturday, the Ironmen tied the Patriots 3-3, ending Wingham’s seven-game winning streak. Wingham started off the game with a goal from Rhys Vollmer (Kincardine) assisted by Kyle Stanbury (Goderich). Mount Forest evened the score before the second, then took a one- goal lead in the second before extending the lead with a third goal 33 seconds into the third, marking three unanswered goals. Koopman responded with a goal assisted by Tolton, cutting the Patriots’ lead in half. After pulling the goalie, Wingham was able to tie the game up with 16 seconds left in the game. Melady earned the tying goal, assisted by Vollmer and Brayden Fischer (Teeswater). Overtime proved fruitless as neither team could capture the win. Wingham served six penalties totalling 12 minutes while Mount Forest served eight minutes on four penalties. Devon Carson was the goalie for Wingham, playing 66 minutes total and saving 43 of 46 shots. The Ironmen faced off against the Mitchell Hawks on Oct. 9, but a score wasn’t available at press time. (Denny Scott photo) The Dektron Compressor at the North Huron Aquatic Centre is in dire need of a repair according to North Huron staff that will cost the municipality approximately $30,000. Vicky Luttenberger, Director of Recreation and Community Services, explained during council’s Monday night meeting that the compressor and refrigerant lines are critical to the North Huron Wescast Community Complex’s aquatic centre. Only one of its two compressors is operational and several leaks have been discovered in the refrigerant lines. Luttenberger reported that the compressor can’t be repaired and needs to be replaced, so, under an exception in the municipality’s procurement policy, Luttenberger started a work order to resolve the issue. If the remaining compressor fails, Luttenberger said, the aquatic centre will need to be closed temporarily. The estimated cost for repairing the existing unit is $30,000, which will completely drain Luttenberger’s department’s annual emergency repairs budget of $20,000 and require the remainder to come from other projects, resulting in the township deferring replacement of a boiler in the complex until the 2020 budget year. Luttenberger said that, within the next five years, the entire Dektron unit will reach the end of its life cycle and need to be replaced at an estimated cost of $250,000. Council approved the repair and necessary budget changes.
