Thanksgiving to be a time of scheduling, family fun
You can smell fall in the air, but
don’t ask me how it smells; it just
smells like fall. The changing of the
seasons is one of my favourite things
about living here. One thing leads to
another and the next season has
arrived. It reminds me of the aging
process, you know it’s coming, have
always known it was going to
happen, but it still seems to come as
a surprise. So, for the changing
seasons and aging, relax, it’s going
to happen anyway, so enjoy!
Election coverage is tedious. Lots
of words and little news and then
repeat and repeat and repeat. I’m
thankful that Canada has limited
days to campaign, for listening to
some of other verbiage is hard to
take day after day.
Climate change is a topic that has
the younger people engaged and
angry. Hearing the stories, statistics
and worries should have us all angry
and concerned. This is one deal we
need to help fix or our grandchildren
and their children will suffer. Often
when we hear bad news, we lament
that there is nothing we can do about
it anyway. In this case, not true.
Challenge our lawmakers. Call out
abuses. Any chance in our
consumerism will help. Use cloth
bags to shop, buy local when
possible, be aware of single-use
products, the list goes on. You know
them, but please pick a couple and
stick to them as you join the
concerned people of this planet.
We have the Toronto Star
delivered daily and that’s a lot of
reading, some good, some not so
much. The one that surprised me this
week is that “the fashion industry is
the second largest consumer of water
and is responsible for eight to 10 per
cent of global carbon emissions
more than all international flights
and maritime shipping combined.
That certainly gave pause for
thought. Our responsibility is to read
labels, buy less, recycle all
clothing and use some sense as a
consumer.
Thanksgiving Weekend is a time
for families to gather and give thanks
for the blessed lives that we have.
Tradition held for the Sunday
gathering to feast on the autumn
bounty. Things have changed and
families had to decide what
traditions could remain and what
needed to go. Our family has always
had weekend workers, so schedules
are consulted and dates set, often not
on that Sunday. The larger the
family, with more 24-hour workers,
the more complex details become,
but well worth it.
When family gathers around the
table to share food, stories, laughter
and love, that is a true celebration.
Twenty of our clan gathered this past
Saturday to celebrate a little
tradition, a lot of love and a few
dreams tossed into the mix. A
wonderful day and an afternoon nap
for me on Sunday.
Happy Thanksgiving wherever
you may be.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
We had a slowdown at the
Brussels Legion Branch last week.
Cadets on Tuesday evening will still
welcome youth 12-18 to join the
Corp. This is a free group to join
with many different activities to take
part in. Learn co-operation,
leadership, drills, sports and much
more. Drop in any Tuesday night.
Maybe music is your forte! The
Brussels Pipe Band is looking for
new members to learn the pipes or
the drums. They meet Thursday
nights for practice and welcome
inquiries. Contact Don Martin.
The fish fry crew finished up the
final fry of the year by heading to
Winthrop Cavan United Church on
Friday evening. There were almost
250 people for the dinner. Comrades
Jo-Ann and Judy worked Thursday
evening to get everything ready.
Cooking on Friday evening were Jo-
Ann and Judy, Sandra Brown, Deb
Ross, Kathy Burkholder, Rick
McDonald, Nanci Ducharme and
Mabel Glanville.
It’s now time to clean up the fryers
and put them away for the season.
We will leave one close at hand for
upcoming wing nights, but the rest
will be cleaned up for winter. The
building will be tidied and some
things brought into the Branch for
winter storage or use.
The fish fry crew has been a busy
bunch doing 21 fish fry events this
past year. The crew has become
smaller with a few of the older
Comrades retiring from
participating. We need more help
next year if we are to continue on
with the dinners. We will also look at
cutting back in the numbers of
dinners even though they are our
major fundraiser for the Branch.
We must thank our combined fish
fry committee personnel for all their
hard work this summer. Booking the
fish fry events was Sandra Brown at
the Branch. Ordering the necessary
supplies and thawing the fish were
Jo-Ann McDonald and Judy Lee.
Looking after getting help for the
events was Deb Ross. Fryer
maintenance was Lisa Glanville and
Joan Smith. Many hands make it an
easier job for all. Help is the major
issue with some Comrades being
called upon many times. We hope
more Comrades will step forward
and put their names on the work list
to help at least a couple of times a
year.
The Catch the Ace draw was
conducted by Lisa Glanville, Joan
Smith and Sandra Brown upon her
return. The lucky winner was
Kristen Pipe and she won the weekly
prize of $211. She chose envelope
number 22 and found the six of
clubs. The estimated jackpot for the
next draw is $1,000. Get your tickets
at Jam Jar, Bulk and Bargain,
Brussels Variety, McDonald Lumber
and the Brussels Legion.
Those attending can enter their
name into a draw each week they
attend, for the mystery prizes
available to be won the night the ace
is found. Food is available every
Friday night and Oct. 11 will feature
sausage on a bun.
Zone darts were held in Goderich
last weekend. The Branch had a
good group of Comrades attending
and hoping to do well. We are
pleased to report that Ron Schmidt
won the singles title and Eric Ross
finished in the top eight to advance
to district play. Ron and partner
Andy Overholt won the doubles
division and Ryan Shaw and Mark
Campbell finished in the top right to
advance as well. District play
will be in Elora. Congratulations
Comrades.

Spreading the love
After the second ‘Catch the Ace’ fundraiser was a huge
success for the Brussels Branch of the Royal Canadian
Legion, the committee behind the fundraiser decided to
give back to the community. Above, Andrea Van Nes of the
