Baga Bacon Bites
Ingredients:
• Rutabaga peeled and cubed (30
one-inch pieces)
• Two tablespoons low sodium soy
sauce
• 10 slices low sodium bacon (cut
crosswise into thirds)
• One-third of a cup of ketchup
• One-third of a cup of firmly
packed brown sugar
• One tablespoon apple cider
vinegar
• Freshly ground black pepper
Preparation
• Combine rutabaga and soy
sauce in container with lid and let
marinate, turning occasionally for
30 minutes.
• Preheat oven to 400°F. Wrap
each cube of rutabaga in bacon and
secure with toothpick. Set a cooling
rack into a rimmed baking sheet and
spray with non-stick vegetable spray
then arrange the bacon wrapped
rutabaga on top. Bake until the
bacon renders its fat and is crisp,
about 30 minutes.
• Prepare sauce by stirring
together ketchup, brown sugar and
apple cider vinegar.
• Remove the baking sheets from
oven and carefully lift the cooling
rack off the baking sheet. Drain
away the fat and wipe the baking
sheet dry with paper towel and line
it with parchment paper. Lightly
spray with non-stick vegetable
spray. Carefully transfer the bacon-
wrapped rutabaga into bowl with
sauce, swirling to fully coat and
place on baking sheet.
• Return the baking sheet to the
oven and bake 15 additional minutes
until sauce is reduced to a sticky
glaze. Transfer to a warm serving
platter, sprinkle with pepper and
serve while hot.
• Place the Baga Bacon Bites in
small cupcake liners for ease of
serving.

The bed race and soap box derby
brought a significant crowd to
Gypsy Lane, Sparling said, and a
late addition to the day, the rutabaga
roll race, which saw participants roll
a rutabaga uphill on Gypsy Lane
towards County Road 25, was also
well attended.
“It’s sure to come back for the
next festival,” Sparling said.
Food was a central theme of the
event, Sparling said, with three food
vendors at Blyth Lions Park, where
much of the activities took place,
who all sold out throughout the day.
She said the vendors got into the
spirit of the festival with Cherrey’s
Doghouse offering cinnamon sugar
rutabaga doughnuts with bacon and
rutabaga pierogies and Sweets Love
Eats offering pulled pork tacos with
rutabaga slaw.
The rutabaga cooking contest was
also well-received, Sparling said,
with Patty Kellins’ “baga bacon
bites” winning the best appetizer
and people’s choice awards.
Other winners of the contest were
Judy Lamber whose baga loaf won
the kid-friendly category, F.E.
Madill School’s culinary program
whose shepherd’s pie won the
supper category, and Margaret
McInroy who won the dessert
category with baga snacking cake.
Other winners from the weekend
included:
• Home run derby ($100): Chris
Stewart
• Home run derby (Set of Tires
from Townsend Tire): Wyatt Carey
• Best-dressed storefront:
Bainton’s Old Mill with Stitches
with a Twist receiving a special
mention.
• Soap box derby: Brady and
Tyson Finch
• Bed races: The Baga Bunch
• Appliance draw (Smeg Kettle
from Eurohomes): Cat O’Donnell
• Appliance draw (Smeg Mixer
from Eurohomes): Bev Elliott.
Don Irwin of Lucknow was the
lucky winner of the 100 Bucks for a
Truck draw.
The Rutabaga Festival is set to
return to Blyth in three years,
accompanying the village’s
homecoming. It will then be held
every five years after that.

The Flying Finches
Brady and Tyson Finch, or for soap box derby purposes, The Flying Finches, were the winners
on Saturday at Blyth’s Rutabaga Festival. The Finches, front, made their way down Gypsy
Lane faster than their competition, earning them the coveted trophy and a cash prize as
hundreds lines the streets cheering on the action. (Denny Scott photo)

It’s a tough job...
... but somebody has to do it. That was the case on Saturday for the Rutabaga Festival cooking
competition where the judges had their hands full tasting all kinds of delicious creations
featuring the humble rutabaga. In the end, it was Patty Kellins who won over audiences with
the trusted and true method of incorporating bacon. It was her baga bacon bites that won both
the appetizer and people’s choice awards. Judy Lamber won the kid-friendly category with her
baga loaf, while the F.E. Madill culinary students ruled the supper category with their
shepherd’s pie and Margaret McInroy’s baga snacking cake won the dessert category. Kellins’
recipe is featured below. (Denny Scott photo)
