Ironmen continue season-opening winning streak
The Wingham Ironmen posted two
5-1 wins over the weekend,
extending the team’s season-opening
winning streak to six.
On Sunday, Sept. 29, the Ironmen
posted a convincing 5-1 win over the
Walkerton Hawks.
While neither team could strike in
the first period, the second was
dominated by the Ironmen with
Corey Restoule (Kitchener) striking
just over two minutes into the
period. Restoule’s goal was assisted
by Liam Melady of Seaforth and
Dana Smith of Atwood.
Hayden Robinson of Belgrave
then scored back-to-back goals to
end the period. Robinson’s second
goal was assisted by Ryan Litt
(Palmerston).
Melady opened the third with a
goal just over two minutes in,
assisted by Tyson Koopman
(Palmerston) and Logan Tolton
(South Bruce).
Jacob Bishop (Kincardine) earned
the Ironmen’s final goal of the game,
assisted by Restoule.
The Hawks posted one goal just
past the seven-minute mark in the
third.
Garrett Golley got both the start
and the win for the Ironmen in net,
stopping 23 of 24 saves.
The Ironmen earned the only
penalty of the game, a two-minute
minor.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, the
Ironmen posted a 5-1 win over the
Hanover Barons.
The Barons earned their only goal
of the game in the first, after which
Wingham scored five unanswered
goals to earn the win.
Tolton earned the Ironmen’s only
goal of the first, assisted by
Koopman and Melady.
Kyle Stanbury (Goderich) opened
the scoring in the second for the
Ironmen with a power-play goal,
assisted by Chase Meurs
(Kincardine) and Rhys Vollmer
(Kincardine).
Carter Collinson (Listowel)
earned the Ironmen’s next marker,
assisted by Vollmer and Melady.
Stanbury then scored his second of
the game unassisted, followed by
Tolton earning his second, assisted
by Bishop and Meurs.
Goaltender Devon Carson earned
the start and the win for the Ironmen,
saving 26 of 27 shots.
Wingham played a relatively clean
game, earning only four penalty
minutes on two infractions while
Hanover served six infractions with
a total of 12 minutes.
The Ironmen next host the
Goderich Flyers on Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.
before taking to the road on Oct. 5 to
face off against Mount Forest.

Tight game
The women’s hockey teams from York University and the University of Western Ontario in
London clashed in Clinton last week, bringing out hundreds of young hockey players to see
how it’s really done. Emma Suitor, left, worked to poke a goal home under York goaltender
Lauren Dubie, but was unsuccessful as York would edge out Western 1-0. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Flyers edged out by Mitchell
The Goderich Flyers ended up on
the losing side of two high-scoring
affairs over the weekend.
On Saturday, Sept. 28 the Mitchell
Hawks edged out the Flyers 7-6 in
Goderich.
The Flyers opened scoring in the
first, marking two goals before
Goderich’s Jeff Fritzley of Seaforth
earned the Flyers’ first goal, assisted
by Jack Stecho (Goderich) and
Nolan Gagnier (Brucefield).
After the Hawks earned another
goal, bumping their lead to two,
Goderich’s Eric Vander Eyk
(Listowel), assisted by Cody Treble
(Goderich), ended the scoring for
the period.
Mitchell came out strong in the
second, scoring two more goals
including one power-play marker.
Vander Eyk responded, earning
his second of the game, assisted by
Stecho and Gagnier, finishing the
scoring for the second period.
Goderich’s Colton Quipp
(Monkton) started the scoring in the
third period with a marker assisted
by Matt Bean (Goderich).
Mitchell earned two more goals
before Avery Timmermans (Zurich)
put one past Mitchell’s goaltender
on the power-play assisted by Bean
and Trent Michie of Belgrave.
Gagnier scored the last goal of the
match, assisted by Fritzley and
Mitch Fisher (Goderich).
Goderich’s goaltending was split
between Spencer Lazarevich who
played just over 14 minutes,
stopping all five shots against him,
and Jarod Fleming, who finished out
the match with 28 saves on 35 shots.
The Hawks doubled the Flyers in
both penalties and penalty minutes,
earning 16 minutes on eight
infractions versus Goderich’s eight
minutes on four infractions.
On Friday, Sept. 27 the Mount
Forest Patriots earned an 8-2 win
over the Flyers.
In the first period, Mount Forest
marked four goals, with Fritzley
earning Goderich’s only goal of the
first after Mount Forest’s second of
the period. The goal was assisted by
Vander Eyk and Gagnier.
Mount Forest put up the only goal
in the second and three goals in the
third before Parker Gibbings of
Auburn earned the second and final
goal for Goderich, assisted by
Timmermans and Michie.
Thompson and Lazarevich split
the game again with Lazarevich
playing over 46 minutes and saving
36 of 40 shots. Thompson finished
the game, stopping 11 of 15 shots.
Mount Forest tallied eight penalty
minutes on four infractions while
Goderich spent only six minutes in
the penalty box on three infractions.
