I confess to not ever reading the whole paper – just a quick look for the articles that hold some interest for me. However, the puzzles are what I appreciate. Crosswords interest me, but seldom am I able to complete them. But I try. The Star carries a crossword puzzle in the Saturday issue titled the “Colossal Canada Crossword”. It is a good test of Canadian geography and sometimes your French. Saturday’s puzzle offered the clue, “historic town in Huron County with a beautiful clock tower”. Often we wonder at the expense of keeping these landmarks in repair but everyone working on that puzzle learned a fact about Seaforth. One other time the question was the site of the world’s largest salt mine. And another one asked for the location of the secret radar training town of World War II. Those answers I knew! Good to know our little piece of the country is not forgotten. Sunday’s edition of the Star carried a story about a stolen toilet. The writer, Kaly Soto, of the New York Times had some very humorous comments to make about this fully operational gold toilet worth many millions. Seems there was always a lineup to experience the flush! The 18-karat solid gold toilet named “America” was part of a collection of works by Maurizio Cattelan. The toilet was stolen from the exhibit at Blenheim Palace, birthplace and family home of Winston Churchill. Made in the Kohler style, the toilet was produced in a foundry in Florence. (The Italians do love their excesses!) Although a thief has been arrested the toilet has not been recovered! Members of Londesborough United Church will join in worship with Knox United Auburn on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the Ball’s Chapel on the Baseline Road at 10:30 a.m. Londesborough United will be initiating a food drive for the local food bank until Thanksgiving. Donations can be placed in the baskets in the entrance at the church. On Wednesday evening, Sept. 18, six Londesborough Lions Club members received Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for their many years of service to our community and the wider Lions Club Association. The ceremony was held in Kincardine. Recipients from the local club were: Don Allen for 15 years, Carl Nesbitt for 40 years, Ron Nesbitt for 35 years, John Hoggart for 30 years, Sam Doherty for 25 years and Don MacGregor for 35 years of service. Congratulations and thank you, Lions! Many readers are aware that the month of August was a sad one for our little community. One of our longtime residents, Robert (Bob) Reid, passed away at Huronview on Aug. 23. Bob and Edna came to the village with their young family in the mid-1960s and lived in the former Presbyterian Church manse, the last house to the north at the east end of the village. A number of years later the couple erected their log home on London Road. Bob’s early working years were spent with George Radford Construction of Blyth as a shop mechanic and grader driver. Then Bob was a foreman for Ontario Hydro out of the London Department until his retirement. Villagers will recall that Bob liked to just get in his truck and tour the area. The couple had horses in a pasture behind the house for a few years to watch and care for. Bob enjoyed good health for much of his retirement but about a year ago he made a move to Huronview. The Reid immediate family held a gathering at Edna’s home on the Sunday following Bob’s passing to find comfort together for their loss. Interment will take place at a later date.
