Sports
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club and Katie and Shawn Cottrill
of Belgrave, known collectively as
Team Cottrill, will be making
history on Oct. 4.
During the club’s monthly wing
night on Oct. 4, the Cottrills, who
represented the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club when they were named
provincial champions earlier this
year, will receive their 2019
Provincial Championship banner
from the Ontario Curling
Association.
The Cottrills will be presenting the
banner to the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club to be permanently
displayed. This marks the first time
in the 138-year history of the
Wingham Curling Club that a team
representing it has won provincial
gold.
The event is set to take place at 4
p.m.
The provincial win was a
momentous occasion for the
Cottrills, Shawn explained to The
Citizen earlier this year.
While the Cottrills have competed
at the nationals before, this year was
the first time they did so
representing Ontario.
Aside from provincial
representatives, berths in the
national championships can be
earned on points alone, which the
Cottrills have done.
“This has been one of our number-
one goals since we started
competing in mixed doubles six
years ago,” Shawn said. “We lost in
the final in 2015, then lost in the
semis in 2016 and haven’t been back
to the playoffs since. It was pretty
awesome to finally put on those
Ontario jackets.”
The Cottrills will also be
celebrating moving up in the
national curling rankings. After
winning a bonspiel in Boucherville,
the team moved up the rankings to
become the sixth overall squad in the
national mixed doubles curling
rankings.

Ironmen open season with wins
The Wingham Ironmen opened
their season with two home-ice wins
over the Mount Forest Patriots and
the Goderich Flyers.
On Sunday evening at the Wescast
Community Complex, the Ironmen
edged out the Flyers 1-0 after
outshooting Goderich 33-22.
Wingham’s game-winning goal
was scored by Kyle Stanbury
(Goderich), assisted by Chris Adlys
(Point Clark) and Dawson Fahrer
(Hanover), midway through the
second period.
While the game was a low-scoring
affair, there was plenty for
scorekeepers to keep track of with
Goderich being penalized seven
times for a total of 15 minutes and
the Ironmen being assessed
11 infractions for a total of 26
minutes.
Goaltender Devon Carson
(Flesherton) faced 22 shots for the
Ironmen, playing all 60 minutes of
the game.
In the Ironmen home-opener,
Wingham posted a convincing 6-2
win over the Mount Forest Patriots,
whom the Ironmen also outshot 33-
31.
Wingham dominated most of the
game on the scoreboard, with Logan
Tolton (South Bruce) opening
scoring with an assist by Tyson
Koopman (Palmerston) and Fahrer.
Koopman then earned his own
marker on the powerplay, assisted by
Adlys and Corey Restoule
(Kitchener).
Wingham’s assault continued with
two more unanswered goals in the
second period. Dana Smith
(Atwood) found the back of the net
assisted by Tolton and Restoule.
Carter Collinson (Listowel)
earned the next goal assisted by
Rhys Vollmer (Kincardine).
Koopman started the third period
by completing his hat trick with two
early, back-to-back goals.
One minute and 20 seconds in,
Koopman beat Mount Forest’s
defence with the help of Tolton.
Koopman then earned an unassisted
goal 24 seconds later.
After six unanswered goals,
Mount Forest earned its
only two markers of the game.
Carson played the entire game
again, stopping 29 of 31 saves.
The Ironmen served six penalties
totalling 23 minutes while Mount
Forest served seven penalties
totalling 22 minutes.
The Ironmen next take to the ice at
home in on Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. against

The Flyers served seven penalties

In the Flyers’ home-opener, the
Kincardine Bulldogs posted a 3-1
win over Goderich.
The Bulldogs earned three goals
over the first two periods, while
Goderich’s Ethan Long (Kincardine)
marked the Flyers’ only goal
of the game in the third
period, assisted by Jack Stecho
(Goderich).
Jarrod Flemming (Stratford) and
Lazarevich shared goaltending
responsibilities with Flemming
stopping 24 of 27 shots and
Lazarevich stopping all 18
opportunities put on him.
Kincardine served 10 minutes of
penalties on five infractions while
Goderich served 18 minutes on six
infractions.
The Flyers next take to the ice on

Hawks at the Maitland Recreation
