had by all, renewing old friendships

Former lawn tennis property decision deferred
The future of a main street
property in Blyth remains up in the
air as North Huron Township
Council deferred making a decision
on the land, which is adjacent to the
Blyth Lions Club, during council’s
Sept. 3 meeting.
Formerly the Blyth Lawn Tennis
Club property, the land was
expropriated by North Huron several
years ago when an owner or their
descendants couldn’t be located.
The property is a “through”
property, fronting both on Queen
Street and Gypsy Lane, and includes
a portion of the Lions clubhouse and
the entry used to access it, as well as
the pool and park on the Lions Park
property.
Staff explained that the site is
visible, accessible and there is a lot
of potential for residential
development, but they did mention
that the Blyth Lions Club would like
to work with North Huron on the
issue before any decision was made
going forward.
The report, penned by Chief
Administrative Officer Dwayne
Evans, Director of Public Works
Sean McGhee and Director of
Finance Donna White, details how,
in 2014, the council of the day
directed staff to consider severing a
portion of the lot for residential
development purposes.
The report also indicates that any
change should take the Blyth Lions
Club into consideration.
The property is currently zoned
Community Facility and is
designated as such in the
municipality’s and county’s official
plans and would require official plan
and zoning amendments to allow
residential developments.
Blyth Lions Club member John
Stewart was in attendance at the
meeting and spoke briefly when
asked what the club would like to
see done with the property.
He explained that the club feels
recreation is important to the
community, and that its members
know housing is essential. The
possibility of the club buying the
land was also discussed, though
Stewart said that council shouldn’t
expect the club to pay market value
for it.
Reeve Bernie Bailey then asked
Stewart if he was saying that the
Lions Club would prefer if the
property was not made into a
residential development.
Stewart said he would prefer
waiting until the Lions Club could
put forward a final proposal in
writing, but did say members are not
“totally in favour of residential
development on that property”.
Deputy-Reeve Trevor Seip said
that, based on the information
presented, he wanted to defer the
motion until the Lions could put
forward a proposal for the land.
