With a new school year officially
underway, several local schools are
facing reduced staffing as a result of
cuts while enrolment stayed
relatively stable across the area.
HULLETT CENTRAL
Hullett Central Public School
welcomed 253 students, which is
where new permanent principal
Dree Park expected the school to be,
down from 260 last year.
Park spent the last six years as a
principal at Brookside Public
School, which is where he attended
Kindergarten through Grade 8.
He said the school and community
there are good and his experience
with Hullett makes him feel it will
be similar.
With his first week under his belt,
Park said that the parents, students
and staff at Hullett work well
together and he feels it’s a good spot
to be and looks forward to being at
Hullett for several years.
In terms of staff, Park said there
are new teachers taking over for
several senior grades as long-time
teachers have been put on temporary
assignments.
Mrs. Gerber, the Grade 7/8
teacher, is on assignment at Seaforth
Public School as its vice-principal,
and Mr. Coups, a Grade 6/7 teacher,
is filling a similar role at Exeter
Elementary School. Taking over for
Gerber is Ms Atkinson while Ms.
Eveland is handling Mr. Coups’
Grade 6/7 class.
Mrs. Carmichael has joined Mrs.
Bell’s Kindergarten classroom as a
Designated Early Childhood
Educator.
The school will also be sharing a
technical resource assistant with
Huron Centennial Public School in
Brucefield.
HURON CHRISTIAN
While other schools welcome new
teachers, vice-principals and
principals, Huron Christian School
students walked into an all-new
building this year.
Students and staff moved from the
school’s home site in Clinton last
year to Vanastra due to significant
work happening on the building, and
students and staff returned this year.
While some of the work is still
being finished, Principal Nick
Geleynse says the school is
operational and the building has
provided a new adventure for staff,
who were faced with blank canvases
for walls.
The school welcomed several new
staff members and a new educational
assistant, Geleynse said, but in a
very real way, everyone is new to the
school.
As far as enrolment goes,
Geleynse says the school has gained
students thanks to nice-sized
Kindergarten classes. The student
body was 168 strong at the end of
last year and started this year at 178.
Watch The Citizen for more
information about the extensive
renovations to the school.
MAITLAND RIVER
Enrolment at Maitland River
Elementary School is at 467 after the
first week, which Principal Angela
Cowley says is on par with previous
years.
The school is welcoming six new
staff members, some covering
leaves, and a new vice-principal.
Mr. Coursey, who comes from
Huron Centennial, will fill the vice-
principal role. Mrs. Fortune is in the
Grade 6 classroom. Ms. Roth will be
teaching French, Ms. Jurgens will be
teaching Grade 3/4 and Mr. Moore
will be in Grade 5.
A new educational assistant, Ms.
Grotenhuis is at the school, and a
new secretary, Mrs. Donnelly was
welcomed as well.
Cowley said that, in terms of staff,
the school’s complement has gone
down.
NORTH WOODS
North Woods Elementary School’s
enrolment is at 150, slightly down
from last year’s 153, which Principal
Cathy Goetz calls an acceptable
change.
The school is down one
educational assistant, Goetz said,
which is the reality of the recent
cutbacks in education.
As far as staff is concerned, Goetz
welcomed a new technical resource
assistant in Ms. Seimon and a new
French and prep coverage teacher,
Ms. Drummond.
Mrs. Hemmingway, who taught at
the school years ago, is returning to
teach Grade 3/4.
The school is welcoming back
Mrs. Piper, a Designated Early
Childhood Educator in
Kindergarten, and welcomes Ms.
Watson, a prep coverage teacher
joining the school this year.
North Woods is hosting an open
house on the evening of Sept. 23 at
the Ethel-area school.

The John Ellacott Trophy for Best

went to Mike Clark of Clinton for

The Billy Joe Hallahan Memorial
Trophy for Best Restored Tractor
from 1951 and up went to Lorne
Glanville of Walton for his 1963

wasn’t an easy one, Lantinga
suspects, as there were over 200
tractors on the grounds, joined by
54 lawn and garden tractors.
The Feature Car for 2020 will be
a 1950 Buick Super owned by Jack
Durnin of New Hamburg.
Allan Reath of Stratford won the
Best Antique Vehicle for Saturday
award with his 1962 GT Hawk

Daer honoured at reunion

McDonald Home Hardware in Brussels celebrated its 90th anniversary on Saturday,
welcoming Home Hardware officials and residents both young and old to the store for some
fun and a rather original “ribbon-cutting” ceremony on the building’s new addition. From left:
