Michael Miller James S. Brown, M.A., Ed. D. Chairperson of the Board Director of Education On Aug. 10 a good turnout of the Blyth Mosquitoes travelled to Goderich for the annual end of season North Huron Soccer League tournament. The team got off to a good start with a 6-1 win over Wingham Warriors. Three goals were scored by Matt Anderson, assisted by Teag Onn, and singles by Luke Slotegraaf, Darwin Buffinga and Shanda Loder. The second game, with Wingham Strikers, saw an unfortunate red card call against a Blyth player, forcing the team to play most of the game one player short. Despite trailing in the first minutes, the The North Perth soccer league tournament started Thursday night with Brussels U9 II playing against Listowel I. Brussels came through with eight big goals to Listowel's one. Matthew White, as captain, scored two goals, Eric VanVeen scored Mosquitoes rallied to a 5-1 victory with three Anderson goals, one each for Slotegraaf and Onn, this one again from another Irving throw-in. Next they played Clinton Cheetahs in a semi-final, gaining a 3-1 win with goals by Anderson, Slotegraaf, and Wes Beacom (who also assisted on the other two). In the final game, the Mosquitoes came up against the only team to defeat them in the regular season, Lucknow, noted for their excellent defense and goal keeping. For two 20-minute halves and most of the 10 minute overtime, four times while Chris Corbett and Christopher Jutzi scored one each. Saturday morning Brussels II met up with Drayton I in a very exciting close game. At half time, no goals had made it past either keeper. Marty Goetz broke the tension and scored for Brussels, then despite dominating the offensive action, Blyth remained scoreless. Then, with about three minutes left, Anderson was able to get a short pass across the net to Slotegraaf who popped it in to give them the lead. Then a minute later, Anderson finished the year with a second insurance goal, giving Blyth the Mosquito trophy for the first time in its six-year history. All players made excellent efforts all day to ensure this team win, said Coach David Onn. "Thanks also to the many parents who stayed through the whole long day to cheer us to victory!" Drayton answered on a penalty shot in the last few minutes of regular play. The tie had to be broken by shoot outs. Chris Corbett stopped three of the four shots on him.
