Blyth council briefs
Council responds to Snobelen's letter
In response to a letter received
from Minister of Education John
Snobelen; Reeve Mason Bailey
requested a letter be sent to the
minister indicating council has
never been in favour of the educa-
tion tax being collected by school
boards if municipalities had it
removed from the property tax bill.
The letter from Snobelen stated
By Rachel Van Sligtenhorst

Richmond, Erica Clark, Nicole
Bradley, Martina Deuschle.

Last year the Blyth Rovers had a
fundraising chili dinner and raised
more than their goal to put towards
all of our exciting endeavours.
One of the first things we used it
for was the flatwater training
course. Most really learned a lot of
new things there; some had already
taken the course.
Canoeing is so easy and fun. The
Rovers all passed the course and
most even passed the optional solo
part of the course even though it
was quite a windy day.
They took the wilderness course
way up north on the Magnetawan
River. It was a great trip even
though they didn't learn a lot of
new things because of having been
on similar trips over the past three
years.
It was fun meeting new people
and showing them that females can
camp and portage just as good as
the rest of them, the girls said. In
fact, other than conditioned
campers Lavern Clark and Dave
Cartwright, on almost all of the
portages, the Rovers came out first
(take that guys!)
The annual trip went well also.
They went up to Algonquin for
many for the first time and spent
four days in the wilderness. They
found the scenery a little redundant,
there were only trees, no big
mountainous rocks and cliffs.
- Despite the fact that it was also
very expensive, they had a very
good trip. Last year they took the
Gibson-McDonald and the scenery
was amazing. Next year the
intention is to take the French
that "making school boards respon-
sible for collecting their portion of
the taxes would lead to tax increas-
es as the collection services would
be duplicated."
Reeve Bailey wished council's
position to be clarified.
The letter stated Snobelen will
considered council's recommenda-
tions when looking a education
finance reform.
River.
This year the Rovers joined with
the Blyth Pathfinders to Wawanosh
to camp and canoe. They spent one
night at the campground, then the
next day canoed on the lake to
learn rescues, strokes and other
maneuvers. Everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves and the Rovers
hope the Pathfinders keep
canoeing.
Rovers also took 15 Guides
canoeing at Wawanosh. We had to
call in some qualified friends to
help them out. Two guides and a
Rover went in each canoe and
individually showed the Guides
some different strokes. They also
learned the different rescue
techniques. It was a very windy day
and sometimes it was hard to
maneuver on the lake.
After some hard paddling they
made it to shore for ice cream
