THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 1996 ,S ports Blyth Mites win 2 The Mitchell Mets dynasty continued in the annual Brussels Fastball Tournament with a 12-10 championship win over the Monkton Muskrats. The Mets have reached the finals five years in a row (tieing the Wingham BP's record), while their 1996 win gives them four "A' titles, the most by any club in the tournament history. Monkton held an early 5-1 lead but were forced into extra innings when Mitchell rallied for a 6-6 tie. The Mets led 9-6 in the eighth and 10-9 in the ninth before finally winning 12-10 in the third extra inning when Mitchell's Bob Ward struck out Jeff Smith with the bases loaded. Monkton's Luke Smith enjoyed a five for five game including a two RBI homerun in the eighth to tie while Mitchell's Kevin Quipp was four for four with a sacrifice. In the consolation final Sebringville ANAF lost a five run lead, then scored four runs in the first extra inning for a 9-8 win over the London Gators. Friday night action opened with the Brussels Tigers winning 8-0 over Sebringville while Walton defeated Fullarton 8-1. Saturday opening round scores included: Mitchell 9 - Belgrave 0, Embro 5 - Camlachie 2, Shakespeare 10 - London 8, Belmore 2 - St. Pauls 1, KW Pride 5 - Sweaburg 3, and Monkton 4 - Brussels Bulldogs 2. Championship round scores were: Tigers 13 - Walton 4, Mitchell 4 - Embro 0, Belmorc 5 - Summer skies may still be bright but the Brussels Bulls Jr. C. executive is gearing up for hockey season. Manager is Doug McArter while coach is Charlie Smith. Shakespeare 2, Monkton 4 - KW Pride 3, Mitchell 10 - Tigers 6 and Monkton 6 - Belmore 2. Consolations round scores included: Sebringville 8 - Fullarton 2, Camlachie 7 - Belgrave 5, London 5 - St. Pauls 2, Sweaburg 7 - Bulldogs 3, Sebringville 4 - Camlachie 2 and London 8 - Sweaburg 3. The Brussels Tigers became the first hometown team to reach the championship semi-finals but unfortunately a 25 year upward climb ended quickly with a 15 minute downward slide in a 10-6 loss to the Mitchell Mets. Trailing 1-0, the Tigers took a three run lead on back-to-back homeruns by Ken Higgins and Jason Daw, and held a 5-3 lead After five innings. However an error-filled sixth inning gave the Mets seven runs enroute to the win. The Tigers opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over Sebringville. Jason Daw allowed only two batters to reach base while batting two for three including a fifth inning game ending home run. Murray Pipe also batted two for three as did Ken Higgins. Sunday morning the Tigers eliminated Walton in a 13-4 error- filled game. Tim Fritz reached base on all four attempts, including a first inning homerun while Higgins was three for four, also with a first inning homerun, as was Daw. Doug Conley pitched the win, ending the game with three consecutive strikeouts. The executive is still looking for one or two assistant coaches and an assistant manager. Also volunteers are needed for various committees like door admission, hockey school, score and timekeeps, etc. Training camp will open for rookies Aug. 24 and 25 with veterans returning the next weekend. Training camp will be held in the Listowel Arena this year. Any players not receiving an invitation can still attend training camp but must have an OHF form signed by Monday against the Mets Ron Strome batted four for four while Daw went three for four and Gary Pipe two for three. Todd Uhrig took the loss sharing the pitching duties with Daw. The Brussels Tigers finished the Huron County Fastball Schedule in first place and will meet the Zurich Rangers in opening round playoff action. Game one was Monday night in Brussels with game two in Zurich tonight at 7:30. In WOAA semi-final action the Monkton Muskrats scored three runs in their last at bat for a 3-2 win and one game lead over the Tigers. Game two in the best of three series is Friday night in Brussels at 7:30. Brussels opened the scoring in the third and went ahead 2-0 in the seventh. After Monkton's Jeff Earl rounded out, Luke Smith and Barry Ward homeruns sandwiched a triple by Jeff Smith for the win. Tim Fritz was three for three for the Tigers, scoring once and singling home Gary Pipe. Dave Smith and Darwin Erb went the distance for the respective clubs each allowing six base runners. Though slow off the mark in the first, with a single run, Blyth rebounded in the second to take a 7-3 lead. Hullett would not be defeated, scoring two in the second and eight in the third, while holding Blyth scoreless. The Blyth bats returned for the final two frames, tallying a total of 15 runs for a final score of 22-15 for the visitors. Ryan McClinchey pitched the entice contest, 'boasting four strike- outs. Homers were smashed by Josh Albrechtas, Danny Cullen and Korey Machan. Raymond deBoer, McClinchey (two) and Michelle Cook added triples. Doubles were struck by Kyle McNeil, Michelle Cook, Darcey It was a lopsided contest when Belgrave PeeWee Boys took on Brussels in a WOAA game, Aug. 5. Belgrave kept Brussels off the board until the fifth, while they scored 34 runs. The runs totals were: Travis Campbell (four), Craig Marks (four), Myron Hussey (four, includ- ing a home run), Justin Campbell ..(four), Kevin Hopf (three), Tim Robinson (four), Jim McCracken (three), Jason Fear (four), Adam Potter (two) and Rick Buchannan (one). Justin Campbell pitched the first three innings with Hopf finishing off the match. The second game of the series Cook, Albrechtas and deBoer. The squad was equally impres- sive on the defense. The boys were again victorious, Aug. 8, when they met Goderich Twp.. Jamie Ross took to the mound for the first through third, striking out seven and allowing two runs. Off the strength of a Cullen homer in the second, Blyth took a four run lead then followed with another run in the third, to go up 5- 2. Blyth added three in the fifth and seven in the sixth while holding Goderich Twp. to one run, off the arm of McClinchey. McClinchey and Machan earned homeruns in the fifth. Darcey Cook had a good game in the field, snagging grounders and earning outs. Doubles hitting by Albrechtas, deBoer, McNeil and Ross, helped the squad to a 15-3 win. saw Belgrave defeating Brussels 24-7. Belgrave moves on to play Chep- stow.
