Tigers recount 25years of baseball history
Continued from page 25
the first winners of the tournament
taking the championship with an 8-
1 win over Tharnesford. Bob Pegg
of Bluevale was a member of the
Stratford team and later played on
championship teams from
Wingham and Bluevale. As far as
is known, Pegg is the only player to
win championships with three
different teams. He will be
returning to the tournament this
year as coach of the Belgrave Blue
Devils.
Year two saw the arrival of
Walton and Fullarton, two teams
who have participated every year
since. Jim Skinner was a member
of the first Fullarton team, and
although he defected to
Sebringville for a couple of
seasons, will be making his 24th
tournament appearance. The
Fullarton As have since won six
championship and four finalist
titles and were the first team to win
back to back titles (1974-75).
Ritchie's Rockets were the
consolation champions in 1973
and remain the only Brussels team
to win a title. The Rockets lost their
opener to Chepstow, then defeated
the Walton McGavins, Ingersoll
Jacks and Stratford Conroy for the
trophy.
The Rockets starting lineup
included: centrefield, Murray
Lowe; pitcher, Neil Gowing;
catcher, Dave Gowing; left field,
Pete Snow; third base, Murray
McDonald; second base, Don
Laurie; first base, Ken Ritchie;
shortstop, Bill Skinn and right
field, George Valiance.
The Rockets returned to the "B"
final the following year losing 2-1
to Elmira while the Brussels Tigers
have reached the consolation finals
twice, losing in 1984 to
Sebringville, and to Camlachie last
year.
The late 1970s and early 80s
were dominated by three teams.
The Wingham BP's are the only
team to win the championship in
three consecutive years (1978-79-
80) and were finalists in 1976,
1982, and 1983. There was no
tournament in 1981 due to the
Morris Twp. centennial.
A close second in domination
was a team from Arva who were
"A" finalists in 1975, then won the
title in 1977, 1982 and 1983.
Although the championship
banners do not show this, Walton
also was a strong contender losing
in the semi-finals in 1978, 1979,
1982, and 1983. As well they lost

in the consolation final in 1980
before finally winning the "B"
championship in 1986.
The latest team to produce a
Brussels tournament dynasty
appears to be the Mitchell Mets.
The Mets shared the championship
in 1985 (the only year the finals
have not been played, in this case
due to rain), and have reached the
championship final in each of the
last four years, winning in 1992
and 1995.
The 1979 final continues to be
the greatest game played with
Wingham defeating Sebringville
1-0 in 15 innings. Fans still
remember the pressure faced by
Sebringville pitcher Avery who
escaped a bases loaded, none out,
three-ball, no-strike situation early
in the extra innings.
Another highlight remembered
was the team defence of the 1976
St. Pauls Juniors, who defeated
Wroxeter 3-1 in their opener,. then
held Kirkton, Sebringville and
Wingham scoreless to win the
championship.
The Brussels Crusaders Senior
Hockey Club and the Brussels
Tigers Fastball team (ironically
both defending champions of their
respective leagues) welcome
everyone to Brussels this weekend,
for without the fan and team
support throughout the 1970s, 80s
and 90s this tournament would not
be possible.
