Walton boasted many organizations
The village of Walton, situated
on the extreme southeast corner of
Morris Township, the extreme
southwest corner of Grey Town-
ship, and the northern township
boundary of McKillop Township,
probably originated around 1859.
John Hewitt and his wife, the
former Anna Button, from
Buckinghamshire, England, are
credited with being the founders.
Married in Walton, England in
1843, they sailed for Canada five
weeks later and when they chose
their permanent settlement on Lot
1, Conc. 18, Grey Twp., they
named the area Walton. This
couple celebrated their 50th
wedding anniversary here in 1893,
at which 10 surviving children
attended.
Other original settlers would
include Anne Moore, who operated
the general store, the Biggar
brothers, George and Nesbit, who
may have operated an early lodging
house, and James Fulton, the first
blacksmith. Thomas Knox started
up a saw mill and a grist mill in
Walton, both powered by a steam
boiler that had been purchased in
Stratford, and carried into unsettled
area by oxen team. A second
general store was operated by
Robert Pattinson, who had moved
from Yorkshire, England, to
Mississippi — owned and lost a
southern plantation — and then to
Walton, where he became a Justice
of the Peace, and active in
McKillop municipal politics. the
first log school house was
organized for the children of the
area by 1860, and the villagers
soon had a choice of three
churches: Methodist, United
Presbyterian, and Presbyterian.
Kenneth McLeod was the
proprietor of the Rob Roy House
hotel, and the Walton Hotel was
built by Mr. Knox. Post office
services were established here by
1862, with George Biggar the first
postmaster of the village. This then
was the beginning of Walton: let's
look at its development.
Of all the hotels in the hamlet,
the Walton Hotel was the most
successful as it continues to operate
even today. In 1868, John T.
Swallow sold the building to
Charles Sage, who operated it very
successfully until his death in 1893.
People in Walton who were
Catholic attended church at St.
Michael's on the 7th of Morris,
until that church was moved into
Blyth. Then they either went to St.
James in Seaforth, or St. Ambrose
in Brussels. The Methodist Church
was moved into Walton from its
location in McKillop and situated
on the Grey side of the village. It
was used until 1925, when the
congregation joined with the
Presbyterian Church to form the
United Church. From 1925 to 1938,
this was used as an Orange Hall
and then the building was moved
into the village, McKillop side, in
1938, and set up at the end of the
street to make a community hall.
On Jan. 31, 1873, a Society of
the Independent Order of Good
Templars was formed in the
village, as part of the general
movement of the township toward
temperance.
The Orange Lodge was
established very early in the
village, with an Orange Hall for
meetings on the Grey side. In 1891,
a Lady Saunderson True Blue
Lodge was formed.
The Ancient Order of United
Workmen was formed in Walton in
1897. This was an insurance
scheme, in which by May, 1905,
for a man of 50, each $1,000. of
insurance that he wished to carry
cost him $2.71. In 1900, this lodge
built a brick hall, sponsored by a
membership of over 100 members.
At their grand opening in 1904,
they held a ball, at which 200
guests enjoyed an oyster supper,
and then danced to the music of the
Imperial Orchestra from Seaforth.
In 1908, the AOUW was in a
position to pay a dividend of 18 per
cent on their profits from this very
popular hall.
On Dec. 13, 1913, Mrs. Robert
Archibald is recorded as having
attended the 12th annual conven-
tion of the Women's Institute in
Toronto, as the representative from
Walton. While the WI was formed
in the village before the Great War,
it was especially active in the co-
ordinated effort with the Red Cross
during the war. It seemed to fade as
an association after the war, but
then was rejuvenated in 1956, and
today is a strong community
organization, devoted to
worthwhile causes.
In 1907, a social group called the
Walton's Council No. 362,
Canadian Order of Chosen Friends,
was organized by Mr. Madill, at an
oyster supper. Popular in the
county for a while, this group
enjoyed brief success, and then
disappeared.
There was a Canadian Order of
Foresters Lodge at Walton, and a
strong Temperance Lodge in the
pre-prohibition days.
