Unlike the previous and mammoth Gettysburg this film is more intimate, but no less gut-wrenching, in its depiction of those whose ordeal was just beginning the moment they were taken prisoner. Despite being designed for only 8,000 men, Andersonville held over 30,000 of which more than 100 died each day during the summer of 1864. Although Andersonville lacks the all-star cast of Gettysburg I found this a plus which draws our attention to the characters who are, for the most part, free of the stardom that sometimes gets in the way of a performance. Clocking in at just under three hours the film is directed by John Frankenheimer The Manchurian Candidate, The Birdman of Alcatraz and stars Fredrick Forrest, Jarrod Emick and Ted Marcoux. (Unrated — but I would think it is a possible 14A). Unforgettable *** (MGM/UA) is a suspense thriller about a coroner (Ray Liotta) accused of murdering his wife, who injects himself with an experimental serum that allows him to relive her murder and those of several others. Although the film is a combination of numerous movie plots I still thought it was alright, even if I did guess the killer before the end. (Rated R — some rough language and violence) After years of so-so video transfers MCA is finally making American Graffiti ****(MCA/Universal - $44.95 or less) available in a beautiful widescreen version, if only on laserdisc. This George Lucas "coming of age" classic came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest hits of 1973. Hopefully MCA will decide to issue American Graffiti in the widescreen format on videocassette as well. If seems many people arc finally beginning to realize just how much they are missing when widescreen films are cropped for television and thanks to larger video screens the black bars at the top and bottom of the picture are more acceptable. MCA had released some films like Apollo 13, Jurassic Park, Jaws, Spartacus and Waterworld and plans are underfoot for a widescreen edition of ET this October. Other studios are also finding a demand for these editions with Paramount releasing Braveheart and Fox Video offering Speed, Last of the Mohicans, True Lies, the special director's cut of The Abyss and The Sound of Music. Among the other new releases available this week is Screamers (Columbia/Tristar) a sci-fi thriller about blade-wielding killing machines that populate a vast wasteland. (Rated 14A) Al Pacino stars in Two Bits (Alliance) as a feisty grandfather who gives his grandson life lessons. (Rated PG) TV's Olson twins are back in flow The West Was Fun (Warner - $24.95 or less) which I'm sure their fans will be happy to hear. (Rated G or at the most PG) Fans of the late Brandon Lee will no doubt be interested in the special collector's edition of The Crow ** (C/FP - $14.95 or less) which features new packaging and Lee's last on camera interview before his untimely death. Bonnie and Claire Hodges told council of problems resulting from the works project. Water was run- ning from other properties and pooling in their weeping beds, a four inch, old, cut-off tile drain was found to the east of their house and the surveyed property stakes were removed as was three to four feet of their front yard. Road Superintendent George Humphries was given authorization to rectify the problems. The minutes from the previous meeting were amended to state that "Mr. McCormick met with council to voice his disappointment in council's decision to have his two lots (4-4-45 and 4-4-48) remain as two separate assessments for the Dungannon Drain Works." The township solicitor was directed to contact the bonding agency for D'Amore Construction to request an extension of the Per- formance Bond, until all matters_ pertaining to the Dungannon Drain Works are satisfactorily resolved.
