At-bat in the top of the first, Justin Peters and Jamie Ross earned singles, Josh Albrechtas popped a triple, bringing in three runs and Korey Machan and Ryan Mcclinchey added two more triples. A two-run homer by Raymond deBoer brought the run count to seven. On the field, the outs shared between shortstop and the pitcher as Peters basketed a pop fly, Ross struck out the batter for the second out and Peters tagged a grounder for the third out at third. Machan caught. Blyth topped up their 7-0 lead in the second when Nick Stryker and Darcey Cook tapped singles, Kyle McNeil and Peters connected for doubles and Ross brought home three on a solid hit, missing a homerun when he was tagged out at the plate. The squad continued to shut down their opponent with Peters and McClinchcy combining for the first out at third. An accurate throw by second baseman Albrechtas to first baseman Cook earned the sec- ond and strong pitching by Ross ended the inning. Colborne put one run on the board. Blyth went up 13-1 through two and a half on the strength of a McClinchey RBI, Peters' triple, deBoer's double and a McNeil sin- gle. With Ross taking over the catch- ing duties, Peters, then McClinchey took to the mound in the third. Cook recorded the first out at first with McClinchey striking out the last two batters. Colborne scored two. The Blyth bats could not be qui- eted as five runs were added in the fourth. Albrechtas nubbed a single, McClinchey and Peters added dou- bles, Machan, a triple and deBoer, a homerun. With McClinchey on the hill in the fourth, Colborne mounted an attack. Though Peters caught a pop fly for the first out and McClinchey struck out one, Colborne tallied the maximum run count of seven, with only two outs. Seeing their lead slip slightly to 18-10, Blyth came out hitting in the final frame. deBoer smacked his third homerun while McClinchey hit his first of the game. Cook earned an RBI, Ross and Stryker added doubles and Albrechtas con- tributed a single. Colborne was able to manage only one run in the bottom of the fourth, battling a strong throw to second by Cook to Peters for an out, a pop fly catch by Peters and a strike out by Ross. The final score was 23-11. Wallace wallops Belgrave The Belgrave Mite girls were unable to counteract the strong hit- ting and pitching supplied by the Wallace squad when they came to town, July 17. Wallace jumped out to an early lead, bringing four across the plate in the first half inning. Kristen Palmer struck out three. Managing only one run in the first, Belgrave gave up seven runs in the second to go down 11-1. The Belgrave bats remained quiet, pushing only two home in the second and one in the third, The Brussels Tigers enjoyed an excellent Sunday of baseball winning the WOAA Men's Homebrew Championship in the afternoon, then clinching first place in Huron County Fastball League play in the evening. Sunday afternoon the Tigers scored nine fourth-inning runs enroute to an 11-0 mercy and two game sweep of the Chepstow Thunder. Brett Clarkson and Greg Fritz each batted three for three with Tim Fritz adding a homerun. Dave Smith pitched the win, allowing only two batters to reach base. The series opened Tuesday night in Chepstow with the Tigers returning home with a 3-1 win. Todd Uhrig went the distance for the win striking out ten. In both games the Tiger pitching staff struck out the first three Chepstow batters faced. Wednesday night Murray Pipe batted six for six and Brett Clarkson five for five in a 19-7 win over the Zurich Panthers. The Tigers opened quickly scoring seven runs in their first at bat, then adding five more in the third, including a grand slam by Ron Strome. Sunday night Strome batted four for four while Gary Pipe reached base on all three attempts in an 8-1 win over the Lieury Jets. Doug Conley went the distance against Zurich and Lieury for the wins. each throw three bowls instead of the usual four. Fourteen teams competed with the following winners: first, Joe Whyte, Atwood, 3 wins 46 plus 2; second, Lee Ryan, Goderich, 3 wins, 33; third, Ross Pepper, Mitchell, 2 wins 41 plus 3; fourth, Ken Barbour, Brussels, 2 wins 41 plus 2; fifth, Jack Muir; Seaforth, 2 wins 33; sixth, Derrick Harper, Elmira, 2 wins, 32; seventh, Gerald Gibson, Brussels, 2 wins 27. third and held Belgrave off the board. The scoreboard was quiet until the fifth when Wingham tallied two more. Belgrave made an attempt at a comeback, pushing Jason Fear and Travis Hopper across the plate, but their effort fell short. Belgrave lost 7-4.
